KT, it's not a matter (for me) of not being able to read a map or able to trip-plan without a gps or electronic map, it's the extra things it does that save me time, energy and annoyance
telephone numbers to truckstops along route
PRECISE eta to destination(s)
how much tolls will run me
sunset/sunrise (within the minute, useful for when running OD)
mileage logging rather than writing it all down as i go or reverse working it on paper at end of day
its not that I havent driven a vehicle without power steering, I simply prefer to have power steering... Thats the level of difference I see the GPS making -
One of the mistakes people make is buying the cheapest non-truck unit they can find, then piss and moan because they end up off route. I was unloading recently and another driver came up and asked me how I was going to leave. The DC was on a one way road and he needed to go the other way. He saw my Garmin in the windshield and asked me if it was "any good" and I told him it got me everywhere I needed to go and had yet to let me down. He said he bought a car unit for $75 and had gotten routed on non-truck roads a number of times. And of course it was the GPS's fault, not his for being a cheap ### and using the wrong tool for the job.

Read again what I said, NEVER said you shouldn't use it, just said that it should be "checked" against what the GPS is telling you. We do have GPS in all of our trucks, the problem is when a driver BLINDLY punches in the next city/state and never checks the route the GPS is giving you vs most practical route.
I have seen the GPS route guys though the middle of Chicago at rush hour coming from Kentucky to go up into Wis. when to go around would have only been 15 miles further, which route makes more sense to you? -
My mistake, mistook yah for a luddite
, yes a gps is a computer which is literally a thinking machine, but just cause someone (or thing) thinks in way x, doesn't make it right, or correct or smart
gps doing your thinking for you is quite dangerous, there's even data that says blind reliance on tech (cameras) reduces your ability to form and recall clear memories, same with gps, surrender your map planning to a machine and your map reading skills atrophyKANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this.
