I work for a large private fleet delivering fuel. Our terminal manager was previously a mechanic shop manager. But he knows nothing about trucking or gas, or tankers or much of anything. The people that work at the fuel racks have been denying cards to new drivers because my inexperienced boss can’t get the paperwork right, several trailers locked out right now because of expired VTCs.

A week ago my inexperienced boss called a meeting and revealed that his job had been threatened by senior management, I had to bite my tongue as I’m surprised it was only a threat and not promptly done.

Is having this kind of boss rare in the Tanker world???

Drivers are coming in late, back editing their log books, it’s like they run wild because the boss is incompetent. What a mess.

    @Yank the Tank --

Trust me when I say, "I feel your pain"....

I think the answer to your above query is....it's mostly hit or miss.

That kind of manager is prevalent EVERYWHERE--& not just in the trucking world.

This explains why the cartoon strip "Dilbert" got to be so wildly popular....and why the movie "Office Space" was such an incredible hit with viewers (m-m-m-m-m-m-my stapler....:biggrin_2559:).

It's ver-ry difficult in the business world to find managers who truly know how to manage--and lead/motivate people properly.:(

The root of this problem is the fact that senior management made a mistake in promoting this guy to terminal manager. A good mechanic can be taught to become a good shop manager, but that does not mean that he will have the knowledge base or the leadership skills to effectively manage an entire terminal.

I'm sorry you're having to deal with all this mess. I hope they get it straightened out soon.

Just had a long talk with the bosses boss. It didn’t go well. I’m probably gonna have to dust off my resume. Both of them are completely clueless and I don’t understand how either have made it this far. I did have a long conversation with a lady dispatcher who works in corporate office and she has access to the company president and I told her all the shady stuff going on and how these idiots can’t even make sure our VTCs are good at the rack and how productivity is suffering and she told me she’s gonna make some calls.

I’d be looking around for a job at another company for sure .

if they can’t keep up with getting the trucks loaded , and keep up with the paperwork , wait till the DOT does an audit of their records . Or one of the drivers is involved in even a minor accident and the DOT or a lawyer gets involved . It won’t be pretty .

A good manager doesn’t need to have a CDL or Driving experience , although that might help, but they just need to understand that this is a highly regulated industry and when hauling haz mat tanker cargo, you have to stay on top of every kind of paperwork, every inspection , etc

I bet they are not havingthe annual DOT inspections done on the trucks and trailer either , or the regular maintenance .

    We, the unwilling.

    Led by the unknowing.

Have done so much, for so long, with so litle,

That we are now qualified to do absolutely anything,

    with absolutely nothing.

It was a messed up conversation with the bosses boss. He told me if there is no truck for me to drive I have to get in someone else’s truck and sign in to that truck even though I’m not driving it. I’m scratching my head as we have the option to log on ppl net on our own phones but he doesn’t want us doing it. And with all the back editing already going on what would DOT say if they saw all the guys logging in to trucks their not driving in massive numbers.

I’m at the point where going in to work gives me knots in my stomach.

I submit.....with all due respect....if you're not happy where you are....there is simply TOO MUCH OPPORTUNITY ELSEWHERE....to stay put where you are (obviously) miserable.

    Life is just tooooooooooo short.

I definitely will have to prepare to leave. I know my idiot terminal manager has had his job threatened so I think it’s just a matter of time for him, but the regional manager is gonna be a problem so my only thought is to get my resume online, try to get some offers and perhaps file a HR complaint about the regional manager on the way out. The regional manager isn’t normally over this region, the previous regional manager got fired for using company credit card for personal expenses, so there are rumors he won’t be in charge of this area forever so I have half a thought to try to last another month and one or both may be out of the picture.
