Tanker training

    My worst load ever was a load of Sodium Bisulphate . Nasty stuff . Had to wear the full chemical gear . It was a load we pulled for another terminal . The receiver signs the ticket . "Yeah we have room for it but if the alarm goes off shut it off " So I'm watching it and just before it should be empty their tank starts overflowing . No alarm ever went off . No big deal . It's in a containment area . He checks the digital gauges and said there should be room for another 600 gallons . Looks like time to recalibrate the gauges .
    So how long before they can take the rest ? 3 or 4 days . Luckily they are only 70 miles from our terminal . So now I have 40 ft of hose under pressure and it goes over a wall 4 ft. higher than my outlet valve .
    Shut their intake valve and let of my air pressure .
    Close my tank valves .
    Take the hose off their intake and drain into their containment area and plug it .
    Lay the hose down along the tank and take it of my outlet and cap it .
    Lay the hose on top off the containment wall , drop one end inside the containment area and drain the hose .
    Unhook the trailer and go home . We get a call a week later . I go back and hook up . There couldn't be more than 300 gallons still in the tank and it had to be pushed up about 80 feet to the tank inlet . I didn't think it would ever air up .

    I leave my boots on the pants(Throw back from days on the fire dept I guess). I have four different pairs of gloves depending on what's needing doing. I do wish I had a second suit however as that would make keeping a clean apperance easier. Any tips on getting 5th wheel grease off the suit? It isn't coming off in the wash.

    Have you tried Simple Green on the suit ? You might also try making a paste with cornmeal.

    A lot of the solvents and alcohols are around 6 - 6.5 lbs per gallon. We used to load methanol out of a plant in Haverhill Oh. 7500 gal was just a tad over 42,000 lbs. The company thinking was its better to have the extra space and not need it, than to need it and not have it. When you consider the cost of building these trailers {over $100,000} they don't want to have any trailers sitting around they can't use because of capacity limitations.
    Titanium Dioxide Slurry was fun to haul. It was very heavy. Just under 3000 gal was 48,000 lbs. On a two lane curvy road you had to be real carefull. If the sign said, "Curve, safe speed 45 mph", you needed to be doing 35 or you would have 48,000 lbs climbing one of the inside walls on the trailer, due to centrifugal force. We had one driver have a rollover trying to park on the shoulder on a two lane rd. He had to take a leak so he pulled onto the shoulder. It wasn't flat, 48,000 lbs went to the low spot in the trailer and over he went.

    No I have only used regular stain stick treatment things(Actually my daughter does the grunt work for me). The grease is off but there is no missing where it was. Most of our trailers are really roomy hooking up the pto shaft but a few are real tight squeezes.

    "shout it out" spray and a little "dawn" dish detergent and a tooth-brush...

    if that doesn't work, spray a little "ether/starting fluid" on it while scrubbing the suit. obviously outside with no ignition sources...:biggrin_2552:

    As far as sloshing it took me about two months to really get it under control. I still remember the first shot I took from it and how wide open my eyes got.

    I haul fuel as my primary run using super b trailers. 48 000L at a time. I don't notice surge very much at all never have. Maybe it is the way I load it. Could more than likley be that I have 6 compartments to split my load in. As for pulling tankers my best piece of advice is no sudden moves. Be slow on your merging and passing as well as no sudden jerks in corners.

    At this point it may be too late.. but I found out this summer that baby wipes do a great job cleaning off 5-wheel grease from my khaki shorts and cotton t-shirts. A couple washes and I can't find the spots (which were... large: Suggestion, never sit on the 5th wheel) (no, I didn't.. leaned up against a tire that had a huge glob of grease on it, though. Back of my shorts looked.. well, embarrassing)

    Great stuff RickG.... I want to get my cdl in a few weeks ....thats some good stuff to know..i dont think any tanker companies will hire a newbie though...
