But would you have taken the job in the first place? Would you stay? A large part of the reason I'm going the o/o route is because I'm currently paid based solely on tenure. That means I, as a driver that that has averaged 7.3mpg over the last 180,000 miles (fleet average is 6.5) & who is always on time -- gets paid exactly the same as the guy getting 6.0mpg and who oversleeps or otherwise mismanages his hours once a month.

While I am working for them I'll do the best job possible, but I won't be content & stay long.

My point is that no matter what you agree to work for when you sign on to a trucking company, delivering the load on time is part of what you signed on to so why should they have to pay you more for doing something that is already a part of your job duties?

I just cant see the wisdom in trying to bribe a driver into doing the job you hired him to do? Just make sure he has plenty of time to deliver it and let him do his job. If he still don't, then replace him. If he does, and you want to give him a bonus then do it.

Its a shame your business model doesn't include you driving. It sounds as though you don't have a clue.

After you've completed several "ride alongs" to gain first hand knowledge of any difficulties your drivers are encountering with the schedules, and make any necessary changes, you may want to then consider offering a monthly "on time delivery" bonus to your drivers.

I believe there are other trucking companies who offer this type of bonus plan.

Drivers in the highest percentiles of on time deliveries (without violating rules and laws) should be recognized and rewarded. By highest percentiles, I mean 95% and above.

When I worked in Information Technology for a mega-healthcare provider, our goal was 99.99% up-time per month for all computer and network systems. For each month we achieved that goal we all received a bonus,
and if we met the goal for 12 months in a row there was a HUGE bonus. You better believe we all worked very hard to achieve that goal - - - Carrots work better than Sticks!
