I have a question I wanna throw out to you guys.....
Say you're a company driver, using your own tarps....would you feel like the company should give you a majority, if not all, of the tarp pay they receive for the loads? I mean, I know they keep most because its their tarps and what not, but if they had no equipment in the equation?

It might depend on why you are using your own tarps. Does your company, not, provide tarps? Even when I was a company driver, I bought additional securement items that made my job easier. I never expected to get paid for it. Nevertheless, you might approach them to see if you couldn't get a little extra. I wouldn't count on it though.

Just an idea. My company does provide them, 8' lumbers. I have my own 4' steels. But, what if they were to offer the driver the option to buy their tarps from them, so they would now be my tarps, my resposibility to maintain and replace when damaged...you think I should get more of the tarping fee?
Just throwing around ideas. I seriously doubt my company would do something like this tho... -
You would get more of the fee, but all of the blame if the cargo got wet or damaged. Would they make you get your own cargo insurance?
-
Yeah, I didn't think about that. That's a good point.

We have flat rates to tarp/untarp. $25/$10 respectively. So $35 for the load.. doesn't matter if its a full load of lumber or a partial. But we also have a retarp rate of $15 for LTL loads.
For instance, I had 12 auto-lifts, 12 drops: $25 to tarp, $15*11 retarps, then $10 to put the tarps away.. = $200 for my tarping troubles. -
And you didnt really "untarp" did you? Just rolled it outta the way to get the back piece off?

my guess is that there's a lot of cheap freight. THUS the tarp loads. it's how the companies make there money.
i can't think of anya other reason why the company would allow up to 4 hours of the truck not moving for tarping and untarping.
i did a 2 stopper 2 weeks ago.
the load had paper, plastic, load, plastic, paper, belly wrapped straps, and tarps. thank god the second stop came and got there load from the first stop.Last edited: Jan 31, 2013

4 hours for $100 is no deal for the trucking company.
Sometimes loads are tarped just to hide the freight for various reasons.
It comes down to the same thing as always. There are too many trucks to allow the companies to be picking and choosing loads. Your company needs to keep you moving freight and deadheading past a tarped load to a untarped load doesn't pay the bills. Your boss doesn't want a curtainside or a rolltite because they cost more and they increase DH. So if the customer 30 miles away says tarp, then tarped it shall be.
But don't take my word for it. I am just an idiot wannabe that drives, tarps, dispatches, hires, fires, buys the equipment and pays the bills.
MJ1657 Thanks this. -
Really? So if you pick up a pre-tarped load at a terminal and deliver it you get $20? Because that's not what they told me in orientation when I worked for them about 4 years ago.
