When I was with Roehl I hauled could about 70% of the time. I used a regular steel tarp, 16x16. Always loaded mine shotgun style. Hard to explain exactly how I tarped it that way, though it always looked good and never flapped in the wind.
Also, no, I never put straps over it as in, straps over the tarp, I always strapped first, then tarped, cleaner look

SHC Thanks this. -
before you call me a smart ### I know a guy that runs a side kit tarp. he ran side kit for years and hated repainting the boards so when he ordered a new tarp for it he ordered it long with extra d rings. it worked great for 90 percent of the coils you will haul. he would simple pull her down on the first coil and cover how ever many he had. I can tell you with that setup he was out tarping guys throwing coil tarps or square tarps over 2 or more coils...lol just an idea if you know where one might be

Last company I was with hauled a fair amount of wire spools. I kept asking them to just get coil tarps for them but they wouldn't listen since we hauled a fair bit of FAK too, and they said normal tarps will have to do. Coils aren't too bad to do with a regular squareish tarp, but spools can be a bugger because of all the dead space between the sides and spokes. But, you learned fast how to tarp them right, that's for sure.
Though, I have to say, that was just the open sided ones. If the sides were closed all you had to do was open the folded tarp once, then wrap it around the middle. So I guess it all balanced out really.

when I used a coil tarp I got the biggest one they sold, big enough for the biggest coil. it also would fit smaller coils, you just had to wrap a little tighter. I use moving blankets to throw over the coils so any sharp edges do not cut the tarp. $5.00 at harbor frt. if you haul papered coils, as I do you cannot see all the sharp edges all the time, so no matter I use the blankets. too many times when you pull the tarp down tight & with time over the trip the metal will push thru the paper & make freddy kruger marks in your tarp. I need to buy another bag tarp. the last one bought at mytee tarps lasted about 3 months. way too cheap. my 16 by 16 & my 16 by 24 is all I have now. 80 % single coils 10 % 2 coils & 10 % skids &skids with stand up coils.

Some of the coils I have hauled I could use a 4' drop tarp, others I have had to break out the 6' drop tarps, it just depends on how big the coils are. One of these days I am going to get a couple of different size bags, they look alot easier and faster.
When I had my Doonan step deck we talked with one of the engineers about what is the best place to place a single coil. They said as far back as possible while still keeping axle weights legal. The reasoning for this was to keep the back axle of the trailer from lifting. If you pay attention to guys with steps that have a heavy load in a small concentrated area on the deck and are at center or forward of center you can see that the rear of the deck does indeed start to run up hill. This is very hard on the trailer. -
Thanks for the info all. i booked my first coil, going down to San Antonio next week. Just a little one at 30k pounds..... and got a reload right back out coming to Indy. Headed to Tarpstop to go get some equipment.
