Today it is a fad to get a tattoo. In a few years it could be taboo. When I was in high school we would be sent home if our sideburns or hair were too long. Girls had to wear skirts or dresses that the hem would touch the floor if they were on their knees. Things have certainly changed. Regardless of how nice or well mannered you are, if someone is put off by your appearance, you may never get an opportunity to show them.

Tattoos have been around forever. I think the fad nowadays is piercing. I can't get past all the face piercings and lobe stretching. Thank god neck stretching and foot binding hasn't caught on yet.

Most employers want a professional image to retain customers and obtain new ones. Who does not want new business? I see both the employers and drivers side. I myself have none but plan on getting some hence why this thread sparks my interest. We are all equal in this society military experience or not GP. I would expect our performance take precedence over our looks; however, companies can dictate what you are allowed to display for the fact that one persons image can make a customer change carriers. My small company's rule is nothing obscene is to be shown while on the clock; anything obscene gets covered. My boss nor the customers I serve have no problem of me displaying KW tat or a bird tat.

Kinghunter, as a heavily tattooed individual I offer you some advice. Be very careful with letters, faces, and animals. Tattoos change as you age so, that little blue bird will end up being a giant condor by the time you're an old man. Tattoos fade over time so letters and faces often end up being indescribable. A tattoo is a committment so I advise you to make your own outline(instructions found on youtube) and wear it in the place you plan on getting a real one for a few weeks. Just to make sure you're absolutely sure it's what you want.
When the time comes to get your new tat, please go to a professional. Research them diligently. Ask for references. A professional will have no problem answering any questions you have. Whatever you do don't go to a friend of a friend in an attempt to save some cash unless you're absolutely sure of his skills. The most important thing to consider, above all else, is safety. A professional WILL have an autoclave for sterilization. If not walk away. Don't let someone tell you they don't need one because they use new needles everytime. Needles aren't the only thing that needs sterilizing. Happy tattooing.

Yep what he said. I had a friend do my first one. He had all the sterilization equipment and a shop in his house and his portfolio was quite nice....after he was done I suspect at least some of the work in his portfolio was not his own. I wound up going to a shop to have it covered and done right. The shop owner was an artist first and a tattoo artist second. He did painting (all the paintings in his office were his and quite good), sculpting, photography, etc. His shop looked like a doctors office. He freehanded the coverup tattoo and 4.5 hours and $450 later my tat was fixed and looks amazing. You get what you pay for. I'm happy to pay $100/hour for quality work and a 3 hour tattoo from my guy would be a 4+ hour tattoo from another shop.

BTW I also got the "what are you going to do when your 70 and your tattoo is all saggy and unrecognizable"....folks, if I even make it to 70 I'm sure I'm just hoping I make it to the bathroom on time.

I have seen some old folks with tattoo's. I didn't realize tattoo's could stretch that much. What looks good on young skin can look entirely different on old skin.

I can't believe these people charge $100/hour for tattoo's. I also can't believe what some of you must have invested in them. It is your money, but I could not imagine paying someone $100/hour to stick needles loaded with in in my body.

$100/hr is cheap for quality work. You know, you really don't want to rush a tattoo. Before tattooing was legal in SC my cousin went to Augusta for a tat. Told the guy he wanted a cross with two snakes entertwined around it.
Guy was like "no problem be $150, it'll take about an hour & a half." Cousin didn't realize until he got home in the shower. He ended up with earthworms. Yep, two big juicy nightcrawlers wrapped around a cross. They were detailed and shaded real nice and everything. D'oh.:biggrin_2553:
