Ok I need some help here guys and gals...tax stuff

Im using Turbo Tax as I have in the past...mainly because I don't have much as far as complicated stuff to worry about. Basic deductions. After entering in our wage information..we owe over 1100 smackers. I deducted ten grand in mortgage interest, we qualify for that medical deduction, and entering numerous other deductions...what we owe Uncle Sam is still unchanged. Is there a reason behind this? I started off with the Itemized because of the deductions we were taking. However...TT recommended to take the Standard deduction.
Im not a whiz when it comes to tax law and all so I can't figure out why what we owe, is not being reduced as I enter deductions.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks!

What you are saying does not make sense to me.

The standard deduction at your age level for a married couple is 10,900.

There must be an error in the input.

Take a look at the total the Itemized adds up to and see if it is giving the total to you.

Another issue is if you have a large income, then the itemized my be limited and cause the program to choose the standard deduction since it would not be limited.

In other words, a little more info might be needed to discuss, but not something to post openly.

I agree that...one needs to be conservative on what they give out, lol.

However, with TT...it gives us a choice. The standard deduction for a married couple is 10,900 like you said. With our itemized...we are sitting at 10,700. With standard deduction...we are at 11,100. But...I don't really know what those numbers mean and how it affects everything else.

It is not a material amount. I would run with the TT and the standard it gives. It calculates the best advantage in these areas. The tax itself is not going to change much by the difference.

What is confusing is that you stated you had mortgage interest of 10,000 alone.

    Real estate tax
    Personal property tax

Contributions paid by cash and maybe no receipts.
    Contributions paid with receipts.
    Donations to goodwill or others.

    Truck driver per diem.
    Tax program purchase.

You should have a higher itemized in my thoughts.

    Thanks for your replies.

Thats the confusing thing with the mortgage interest. However...unfortunately a few years ago when we moved here, we made the brilliant choice of buying a brand new doublewide. The interest is fairly high on the thing; but when I enter it into TT, nothing changes. The same with our medical expenses as we are over that 7.5% level this year.

Basically Im confuzzled because when I entered my info in, we had a refund. Then when I entered my wifes info (teacher), we now owe. However, when I entered in all of our deductions (interest, Ed Loans, tags, medical...etc)....it didn't drop that much at all. Thats what Im trying to figure out is if we are at a certain income level where we basically can't take any more deductions; or why are the deductions we are taking not having an impact on what we owe?

If you have your log records to back you up, its 52$ a day you spend away from home in your truck

Thats another thing on my list to find my logbooks so I can take the per diem. However, since Im not a regular OTR driver and Im home every night, I don't have many per diem days I can use...just a few from being stuck in bad weather.

However...Ill have to look into that because I heard something on the radio from a trucking accountant that you can't take a full day per diem for the days you leave or the day you come back...something like a partial day for those...ie..if you leave on a Monday and come back Friday...Mon and Fri are partial days and Tues, Weds, and Thurs are full days. Could be wrong on that.

Another deduction is how much you use your cell phone while your away from home, most of the deductions are time spent away from home. Hotel bills, even if you are sitting for how ever many days can be used. Best bet, take to a tax person, then ask them all your ?
