Ever seen what happens to SR-99 on a foggy day?? Those morons out there seem to believe they can safely travel at 70+ miles per hour when visibility is below 100 feet... Seen 100-150 cars pile up out there.... makes a big mess, tow trucks come from all over, takes hours to clean up, and usually end up with some tow trucks hit because of the rubber neckers...

Nana.. almost everything else has been mentioned, so I am going to throw in this... if you get stuck in the San Joaquin Valley anywhere from Sacramento to Bakersfield in the fog.. sit tight and wait it out. There is no way to safely move in that crap. And it's even worse when the temps dip below freezing, because then the fog sticks to everything and freezes over. As experienced as I am in it, I won't go out on those days. Not even on streets I know like the back of my hand.

Well if you go with the fog, there is a pile up every year in the valley, i live right in the middle of that now.

No, NO, No, Californians and snow don't mix, look at the tourists in Colo. in the winter time. I despise these #### Californians in their SUV's with summer tires trying to drive on snow, there oughta be a law.

the part your missing, most of the idiots in Colo. who drive fast on snow/ice are recent transplants or tourists waiting for a wreck to happen.

caveat to this, if your tires are warm, not only will they melt snow and cause you to sink, but if your on a grade and your tires are warm, they will cause your truck to slide. BTDT, chased my truck for 500 ft WB on Vail Pass after the warm tires melted the layer of snow and slid on the ice. Thankfully I was in the truck parking area and the steers hit a slight bump and nosed the truck into a snow bank, otherwise, I would still be paying for the carnage it would have caused if it had made it's way on to the highway

just don't follow them too close

Thank you everyone else for all the helpful advice. What I love about this forum is that people are willing to share and teach. It reminds me of my brothers.

    Thank you all.

Bonnie if I get locked in down in your area........I'm simply coming to your house to wait it out and I expect dinner.

What I love too! That is why I made this site in 2003 and finally it is getting on its true footing and will go much further!

Also, remember, if you run the north (I used to live in Montana and ran from Seattle to Bronx, NY)...do NOT set your trailer brakes if it is really cold (and has been wet/snowy)! I did that a few times and ended up under my trailer in -20 deg. breaking my trailer brakes lose! That SUCKS! You can always tell a southern driver when he/she pulls into a truck stop and pulls all brakes all the time! Should only hear the front one's!

See, I've learned so much from this thread already. I am a Texan and in my part of Texas we get very little ice and no snow. In fact if we get ice over 1" we start shutting down schools and businesses. I would have set both tractor and trailer brakes and not known any of the information that was shared other than I slow down when any unnormal condition occurs and what I learned on my own last april when I first got on the road.

Wyoming at night--sudden ice storm......lovely. However.....out of 4 trucks on the same bridge......I was the only one that didn't wind up in the ditch. I attribute that to a post to me when I graduated school that said "if something looks strange slow down slow down slow down and don't hit the brakes on ice."

I do love your forum Wiseone.
