I'm looking into getting a CDL. I want to know some pros and cons of getting hired by a company that trains drivers compared to going to my local tech college. I know I can get a grant that will pay for about half the tuition at tech which would leave about $2000 debt. While no student loan sounds good to me, I'm concerned about being a slave to the company.

Go thru your local tech college.
    Pros: You can work anywhere.
If you don’t your 1st job, you can quit. (No contracts involved.)
You’ll probably get a better education, not just be shown enough to pass a test.

    Cons: NONE

    Going thru a company...

    PROS: You get a cdl

CONS: Your stuck for 1-2years on a contract.
Job may suck, training may suck, pay might not live up expectations, you may not like otr, disp my be horrible, equipment may turn out to be junk, you were told no Northeast but they keep you in the Northeast, etc, etc, etc... You can’t quit or you OWE them.

It’s like Modern day slavery for truckers. Lol.

There is no good reason to get your cdl thru a company, going to a private school and getting a student loan is a lot easier than some tend to think it is. It’s the only way to do it.

I started with CR England. I worked there for a total of 2.5 months. I made more working summer jobs than trucking. I quit & went to US Xpress. Stayed there 4 years. Had i not gotten my cdl on my own, i would have been in a world of hurt.

+9000 on the tech recommendation. Don’t become a slave of any company.

Some Vo-Techs offer loaded training in your final week or 2. Where you go out with an instructor, and actually deliver a load and pick up a load.

Those instructors are there to TEACH you. Not simply get you into the seat, and collect a bonus.

With a tech college cdl program you have many more choices of companies to choose from and some will reimburse the tuition back to you in monthly installments.
Trucking company training programs are ok. Depends on each individuals circumstances.
Where is your location; state & nearest city? If we know this, we can give you some decent leads on jobs after cdl school at the tech college.

I don't know at this point. I'm just researching options. I have been doing in home CNA work for the past four years for my grandmother (it's a full-time job, and the family pays me.) I know the position will end soon, and I don't want to do this for a career. My goal is to get the most money for the least education debt.

Try for tankers then. The pay in the post about Superior-Carriers is accurate. They do a hair follicle drug test and stress test. If you're in halfway decent shape the stress test will be easy; if not, practice stair step exercises and you'll be ok.
