I realize this is an old thread, but I am a reporter with the Globe and Mail and I am researching a possible indepth, investigative story about trucking firms hiring international students and temporary foreign workers who are perhaps underqualified to drive truck in Canada. Particularly in BC. If you can help with my research, please email me ktomlinson@globeandmail.com. Thanks!

Here’s a research idea. Google the words “Ontario” “truck” “driver” “sentenced” “fatal”. You will find that there are no less than 10 truck drivers in Ontario that are doing time or have done time for killing someone with a truck. They are all south Asian names. I listed their names on another thread about the humboldt massacre.

Some are still in jail maybe they’ll give you an interview and you can ask them if they think they were qualified.

Was going through Ontario about a month ago listening to a program on this very topic. The numbers that were being talked about were incredible, almost unbelievable. Primarily from a specific province in India where young men were brought into Canada on student visas, made to drive for $10-$15/hr with the promise of assistance with permanent residencey. Not sure why when the government seems so concerned about safety they are not opening the scales more and scrutinizing these really young drivers. Same trip saw a truck laying on it's side with four guys standing on the shoulder that appeared to be barely in their twenties. You can draw the conclusion to ethnicity.

Easy, go on Kijiji for any city in Canada, type in truck driver, and start recording the adds that say “students welcome/students accepted”

Also look into People Express, Lightspeed Logistics, Triple 8 Transport, Rig Logistics, Syndicate Transport and iHaul.

These are companies, which everyone and their dog knows are doing this, including the CVSE and RCMP. Why do they get away with it? Because they service Loblaws at a discounted rate.

Ironically a safe family operation with 2 trucks trying to add his 23 yr old son can’t get insurance for him in Ontario even with a clean abstract .. he had to go drive for a Manitoba firm for 2 yrs before Ontario allowed him to be insured... however a mega can add anyone with a cdl .. It shows it’s about money not safety imo

He took a course in the north Bay Area but the insurance company said no due to the company size .. You need x amount of trucks to bring on a young inexperienced driver apparently
