I realize that Im kind of sticking my nose in from the outside a bit... its just that somebody might read this and educate themselves on how to save a few dollars on their fuel. I do apologize though if I offend anybody... definitely not intended.
Buying fuel in each state is a decent strategy...it will average out fairly decent most of the time. You can save more money though by really studying the way each state handles the fuel taxes.
Indiana for instance, only charges a portion of their taxes at the pump...they collect the rest from your IFTA filings...which would be fine by me....except... by only charging a portion of the taxes at the pump they give the false impression that fuel in IN is cheaper...when it may or may not be. Again...this is fine by me...its a marketing stategy to get people to fuel in IN, thus it also brings in the other revenue as most drivers will likely buy other stuff while they are stopped for fuel...that part is fine by me.
The fly in the ointment...for me... is that... let's say somebody is buying a disproportionate amount of fuel in IN because they think it is cheaper. When the IFTA filings are done and the money is distributed among all the states you have ran in... the first thing that is happening is that a large portion of your taxes that have been paid at the pump will have been paid to IN. They will first take out the rest of their actual fuel tax from that sum. The next thing that happens is that they distribute the remainder of that money to the other states that you ran in. Problem is.. IN and a few other states dont distribute that money dollar for dollar. They only allow a portion of that money to be distributed and they keep even more of your money for their state coffers. Then, of course, that means you will likely have to make up the difference in some of those other states.
That is actually as short as I can describe it and some may know more and be able to explain it better. There are many stategies that will work. But for sure.. the more you educate yourself and plan your fuel purchases...the more money you can save. -
