I wouldn't be too concerned with home time if you are going to be an over the road driver. Every 6-8 weeks you will ask to go home and every 6-8 weeks you will get a hassle from your dispatcher about doing so.

If home time is a concern I seriously urge you to not get into this industry. I can tell you now you won't last long at all. For some reason it is very hard for the new guys to invision what its like being gone away from home for that long. I can tell you now, its a long time! Then you have 3 days off and are back at it again.

Its great you want to get into trucking just make sure you are doing it for the right reasons. Its a lifestyle not a job!

I would also highly recommend you stay away from the mega-carriers. If you want any shot at success whatsoever and want to make money I would highly recommend you go for the smaller companies. Driving for Swift, if the stars are all aligned, you will be lucky to clear $25,000 your first year! Your success lies in the hands of your dispatcher and at these mega-carriers the dispatchers are responsible for overseeing hundreds of drivers. This makes you a number not a person/driver! At the smaller companies your dispatcher will be in charge of 5-10 drivers. You will have a good personal relationship with them and scratch each other backs! This is how you make money in this industry.

Being from Illinois there should be no shortage of good smaller companies.
