there are plenty AA's, less women bit i do see them hauling water. can't imagine it would ever be unsafe for either group, apart from the hazards that naturally come with the job.

A child from birth is a blank sheet and it learns on the go from birth; some are taught deep rooted Tribalism some aren't. First 40-50% of the personnel oilfields in the Texas panhandle are of Hispanic decent . You throw in the African decent people who are 10% and a few others who make up 2-3% you soon get your tribal make up. As with most of America at its current demographic make up.
Being from Seattle where people will tend to bend over backwards to make you feel comfortable being from a different tribe "Which has always make me feel Uncomfortable" seeing as though most of our Tribes includes people of Different Tribes which is the norm in our county.
I found Texas to be a different experience in that arena. Which provides for the perfect learning cultural exchange for them and for me.
Your Profile indicates you are from Atlanta GA; and if you are born and raised in that arena you have different take on things. I find that most AA's have a different take on things here in the South Then Pacific North West AA's. The level of Practicing Tribes in Tribalism I find both surprising and interesting at the same time. From my perspective they have far more in common then they don't have in common.
Sure I've been told to look out for this or that town in certain areas and warned. That's because they can tell my perspective is different. I appreciate the warning to tell the truth. There is a bible quote; that I have always found very revealing being raised in the Catholic Church and Catholic School K-12.

Things more important than race and gender: When I empty, I'm never asked, "how do you feel?", "are you ready for another load", "how are your hours". If we're swamped, and this goes in fits and spurts like nothing else, it might be three o'clock in the morning and you've been up all day and as soon as you provide them the information they need they say "I need you to go to..." That can go on for days. You don't have to shower everyday, do you? There are hoses to sling, you're not into nice nails, are you? I'm guessing the population of AA's at my terminal is a higher percentage than the general population. Several African Africans, too. Really, there are so many performance measures more important than any personal biases. That's where I am in West Texas, I won't try to speak for the whole industry.

Regarding race,
Stick with the big companies for fair treatment. The little ones are owned by people who stick their heads in the operations regularly, and if they have a problem with who your father was, they can make your job hell for you, and you cannot do anything about it.
Regarding gender,
If you come to the oil patch with a chip on your shoulder, be willing to get more than your share of oil baths. Be a professional without playing the feminist card, and you can do well out here. Do the job without trying to prove you're a man, and you can make as much money as anyone else out here. But be smart and don't ASK for problems. Too many ways to play with your work if you decide to be a politically-correct smart ###.
Good luck.Last edited by a moderator: Apr 8, 2013
