I can see blocking a lane when its all backed up with traffice. Me an another truckers had to block the right lane off because everyone kept flying up to the cones where it ended then pushing us all back. So me an him just rolled 1mph blocking that right lane, then I let him in the left lane that I had and wow we got through traffic in a zip after me an him did that. There are times for it and times not to do it.
Thank You

Only problem with this is that it's only postponing the inevitable. You will have the same problem when all the other people get to the bottleneck.
-
Depends on what the inevitable is? Sure, it won't make things go faster, but it makes things go smoother. You can either idle along in 4th gear with a gap in front of you, and not touch the brakes, or you can ride right up there with traffic, constantly shifting and applying brakes and trying to fight off people who are after your lane.
The merge happens quicker in front of you because there isn't as much traffic jockeying for position, and now that you've opened up a couple hundred feet of space, you and the guy in the closed lane can step it up, he can jump in front and away you go. Sure, it doesn't do much for the people immediately behind you, but they aren't any worse off than if we all just crowded together anyway.
The fact is that if people would just get in the other lane as soon as they saw a sign that said their lane ends, then everyone would benefit. But we know that won't happen. I would rather go slow, than stop and go. -
The funniest thing that I ever saw was in a construction backup in Kentucky about 3 years ago. We were all stopped and a truck behind me pulled over and blocked the shoulder for about twenty minutes or so. There was a construction sign on the shoulder so he finally moved back in behind me. The guy in the Cadillac Escalade behind him was so worried about getting by him so he could flip him off that he ran past the trucker and smacked the sign dead-center. This was a two post (4"x4") frame with a metal sign and the last time i saw him, the guy was standing beside his busted up Escalade with a "lane ends" sign laying on the hood.

Yes i'm guilty of this. But on a side note this little manuever is illegal and state or dot will give you a ticket for it. -
That's easier on you and your truck too.
-
Well, I know my left knee only has so many shifts in it, and I'm pretty sure the clutch only has so many in it too, so no need to follow to closely in slow traffic and constantly up and down shift LOL.

I have seen truckers move over to block both lanes when coming up to a closed lane, never the shoulder, in fact one time when I had my extended van I was stuck in a construction zone stopped in the open lane, mind you there have been lane closing warnings for at least two miles back, I got fed up with the people who are in a big hurry and zip up in the lane that is closed and then try to squeeze their way back into the open lane. A truck moved over to stop them and I moved over as well so they had to stay behind us. When it was time for the trucker to get back into the open lane I got on my CB and told him to come on over in front of me. I also love it when a lane is closed and traffic is mergering......heaven forbid a car lets a truck come over. I was in the open lane and saw a truck behind me trying forever to get over but no one would.....I told him on the CB to come up to my gray van and I will let him in......and as he pulled up I backed off and he came over.
