I just wanted to post a quick message and thank everyone. I am currently making the transition from my previous career to trucking and I wanted to thank all you guys for all the information you share on this forum. I was thinking about flatbeds because I am not scared of the work and think it would be a good way to get physical exercise instead of sitting all the time. After reading all the advice and information here I am sure I want to go flatbed and looking forward to joining you guys on the road.

    Thank you guys for sharing.

    amiller and MJ1657 Thank this.

You are welcome and welcome to the world of trucking. I think you will find a lot of good advice on here and a lot of bad advice on here. Just because something does not work for someone doesn't mean it wont work for you and vice versa. You just have to figure why someone is not happy and it just might be something stupid. Again welcome

Well your right. I just want to be one of the cool kids.

More background my late father was also a flatbed driver as well when he was not doing heavy hauling. That might be part of it.

Ever see "The 13th Warrior"? The Arab goes sailing along in a monster storm in an oversized canoe, with 12 Northmen whom he doesnt know or understand. He's wanting to puke and theyre laughing and telling jokes. In his first fight, he gets his face slashed and thrown across a room by a guy he impaled with a sword. After the battle, the Northmen say in amazement, "He didnt run." After that, it was easy for the Arab to gain respect.

Tarps are heavy, so are chains and binders. Its extremely hot and humid in the summer, and it's cold and wet in the winter. You get dirty. Really dirty. Everyone can see your work. A half a mile away, they can spot whether or not you're an idiot. Our job is a matter of pride. When you can pick up freight, secure it and deliver it without a blemish, you should be proud. Salute.

I like this quote. Pride in ones work is very important, no matter if its tarping and securing a load or keeping your truck clean and always acting like a professional. No mater what you do you should have pride in your work. Does not matter if you are shuffling papers or CEO of a major corporation. I think the lack of pride in their work is one of the main things missing in todays world. Used to be people where proud to have a job no matter what it was, now people seem to feel like they are owed a job.
