If your buying 2003 or earlier, you can't go wrong with anything. A 3406/C15 CAT, Series 60 Detroit, or N14, are all long lasting engines, BEFORE 2004 emissions. The N14 is the worst of the 3 in my opinion. It's a heavy boat anchor that usually drinks fuel.

Series 60 Detroit's from 2003 and earlier are amazing engines. They can produce great power and fuel mileage that's #### near unheard of with just slight modifications. There as reliable as anything can get, and extremely cheap to fix.

    2004-2007 - Caterpillar, hands down.
2008-2011 - Snatch up the last of the CAT's while you can!
2012 - .....it's a sad state of affairs, if you want a large displacement engine, you only have one choice, which is Cummapart junk. There is the Paccar engine of course, but this is a smaller displacement engine and quite frankly, to new to the market to judge it's longevity and performance.

It has been my experience that CAT engines outlast and out pull everything else out there. There are bad CAT's of course just like any other engine, but very few.

Don't let the myth about "yellow paint costs" scare you. This was true in years past, today, there all close to the same, except for Mercedes and Volvo. These 2 engines will require you to remortgage your house should they need any serious repairs.

12.7L Detroit in an Aero can't be beat for fuel or repair cost or 1million+ on the clock. Turned-up to 500-600hp will up your mpg's even more. Power for the hills and sips fuel @ cruise, hard ta beat. Whatever u get, put an oil by-pass filter on it.

    P.S.
    I like my Detroit

Just on the pacaar engine, we have them for many years, I bought 2 new dafs in 2003 with euro 3 pacaar engines, engine no1 lasted to 230,000 kms ( approx 150,000 miles ) before a complete rebuild and yes it was properly maintained engine no2 540,000 kms and also a complete rebuild, 600,000 kms was the limit with those engines and the newer mx engines are even worse
