The two primary feed stocks for biodiesel are from corn and soybean oils. Other vegetable oils can and are used. The amount of crops used for biodiesel is very small, about 2 percent, of total crop planting. It has had no impact on animal or human food crops.
Ethanol is primarily made from corn. It is more expensive to make than biodiesel. Making ethanol is a distillation process, convert sugars to alcohol. Takes a lot of energy to run a distillery.
