I was 22 when I started at Con-way Freight - it was CCX at the time up north. A little over 6 years later I hold a good line-haul bid at top rate and you'll do better at UPSF. I'll make an easy 85K in 2010.
Don't be afraid to ask the senior drivers some questions. You'll get some looks at first being so young, but once you show some interest in their knowledge they'll help you in any way possible - and they really do know what they're doing. Senior drivers can be your best friend at an LTL company. I know Con-way and UPSF are different when it comes to operations but here's a quick example of what I'm talking about. When I started here I generally got the extra line-haul runs as an extra board driver. We only run a 60 hour book so hours are an issue by the end of the week. There were times I would run the same long run all week on the extra board - by Thursday I would be tight on time and 15 year drivers would let me go first because they knew I wanted to make money and liked having me at their hub. I now return that favor - if a junior driver is short on time and wants to work, I'll give him my spot every time so he can run all week. if you establish a good reputation with your fellow drivers at an LTL company, it makes you job a lot easier.
Good luck man. Based on the questions you've asked, and your attitude in general, I'm sure you'll do fine.
the day i been waiting for

Congratulations Freebird,...
I told you things would come around,...Now the hard part begins,...lol
I had the doubles triples endorsement for years,....But the first time I ever pulled em' was during my road test for UPS Freight last year,......
Just breath deep and concentrate on everything,...Including the pre-trip explain what your looking at and why,....And make sure you talk the "smith system" language during the road test,....Make sure that the trainer doing your road test knows that you know what your doing,.....
Doubles are not that bad,....Just concentrate on what your doing,..
Your going to have a blast once your out of training and on the street!!!Freebird135 and jakebrake12 Thank this. -
Hey Jakebrake12,
I start CDL school next week in SW Ohio, a Con-Way in Hillsboro Ohio is looking for drivers, do they hire recent grads with double and haza-mat endorsements. -
This is Freebirds UPSF thread so PM me with any questions about Con-way. -
-
Will they let you hook a set and drive it around the yard for a bit????
-
yea ive done it a couple times now
-
When is your road test???
Do you know any of your local drivers well enough to ask for advise as to how to handle the road test????
Some people find the talking and explaining the whole process while doing the most difficult part,... -
I had only ever hooked and un-hooked em' before my road test,....
During the test the trainer asked me who I had drove doubles for before,...My answer was "Ive never pulled em' before", He said he wouldn't have known,...
Just be smooth with everything,.....
Hey maybe once yous get on that should be your new nickname "Smooth"
lol,....
