I almost made a grown man cry by showing up 9 minutes early to a stop today. You'dve thought I'd anally assaulted his next of kin.

That crap used to piss me off but now I just find it pitiful.

you know, I always thought on those rare occasions when that happened. "hey, exactly right, now why can't this be the standard to which the warehouse is striving. Instead of being such a rare abberration that it shocks me when it happens.

You know what's sad, when I get a rickety load I don't bother to even write anything on the load sheet, but when I get a good load I actually take the time to write down the load was good. I figured there so used to seeing this load was bad that load was bad this other load was bad that they have become desensitized to it and it doesn't matter.

However if they are doing something right I want them to know they are doing something right. You know what though, I'm going to say this about that. I thought about this a little and as much as the warehouse makes me mad, I have to give them some credit, because I do not really know if I could pack the truck any better I really do not know if I could. I'm sure I too would probably have some questionable packs. Now don't get me wrong some when I say the load is bad it's not like it's unbearable what it usually is, is annoying things, stuff thrown on the tail of the trailer at the last minute all thrown around, no space to work blah blah blah some hunting for product, however it's all stuff that can be worked through and worked passed with a little experience. It's more just annoying things, for the most part the big in you're face stuff is usually taken care of alright sometimes the stop sequencing is a little out of wack, but after the first 4-5 stops come off the trailer starts to thin out a tad and it gets easier as the day goes on.

You know the thing of it, is and I'm not making excuses, but I figure okay they have on any given night 40-50 trucks that they have to load and that 40-50 number is being conservative about it, but that's a lot of trucks my trailer is just one of many. If you think about it the whole thing is rather in-personal and it's pretty much here's you're load either you deliver it or you don't.

yeah, but taht's the job, 50 trailers a night
do it right or at least TRY to do it right, but ####, some loads are like WTF?????

    no pride of workmanship
no management at a low level to ensure it got done right
    and nothing ever changes.

Just because it's hard is not an excuse to do a crappy job.

Everything you said is true, it is there job, were held to a standard out on the road so shouldn't the warehouse also be held to a standard after all you are right 50 trailers a night, it's what we do and our in business and tooled up for.

i get to work late now with the new job (millwork) it doesn't start until 6:30 and it's about 15 minutes away.
I set my alarm for 5:30 and I haven't had it go off yet, I get it before it all the time.

Hey everyone, just caught up reading this post. I enjoyed getting to hear the stories of the various jobs greatly. Very enlightening.

I am curious about a couple of things, as I said, I just read the whole 35 page post, but I could have possibly missed a couple of things, so if this was mentioned already I am sorry for repeating.

I am 32 and currently live in Hickory, NC. I have been doing research on a trucking career for about 7 months now, looking to move away from my long stint in retail management for hopes of making better money for my wife and myself.

Planning on going through a Community College 9 week course this March and graduating in May. Is food service delivery the type of job you can get fresh out of school with a CDL? A lot of the company sites I have been looking at seem to want at least a year of driving experience. I know the customer service part of the job will not be an issue at all, I am very good at interacting and dealing with people. I am not opposed to hard work and actually am looking forward to that aspect probably more then I should, as a means of trying to stay in shape when not around the house.

Any advice anyone can give on companies in my area? I have heard a lot of good things about MBM pay, until the last few pages anyway..lol. Closest warehouse for GFS is in Rocky Mount, which is a bit of a drive from where I am currently. If this is the type of a job one can get with a brand new CDL, would the pay really be in the 50-60k at the first year mark?

Sorry to ramble on, and thanks to anyone that responds!

If I can think of anything else to ask I will keep up with the post as it progresses.

The answer is maybe. GFS just opened a warehouse in Kanapolis, NC but with GFS the warehouse location is irrelevant. With them it's the job location that matters don't worry about the warehouse because working at GFS you could spend 30 years at GFS and only have been to the warehouse a handful of times. I to date have only ever made 1 homage to the warehouse.

    What about these guys:
