I never said to go buy cheap tools. The most expensive tools in the world won't gaurantee you from busting open any knuckels. I typically only buy Craftsman tools, the prices that Snap-on and the other tool truck salesmen get for their stuff is to high for me. Their tools can't do anything that mine won't.
-
And you don't have to find your rep if one breaks.
Just walk into a Sears.
For my air stuff, I can replace 6 "Harbor Freight jobbies" for the cost of 1 Snap-On.
OTOH - I do have some "special tools" that you can't find in sears. And if I were wrenching 40 hours a week, my box would be snap-on...
Rick -
Sure they won't.
I used to work at sears in the shop when I was just out of high school. I bought a LOT of craftsman tools as a result. When I went to tech school for automotive, I learned REAL QUICK what a snap-on or other professional grade tool will do compared to a craftsman.RedForeman Thanks this. -
Yup, they'll drain your wallet a LOT quicker.
I know; I used snap-on when I wrenched for a living because the rep came by the shop every week and the payment terms were weekly with no credit check. Today I buy Craftsman. If I had the cash and / or credit back then, I'd have bought Craftsman then too. -
I dunno. Kinda like the TQ Wrench that vibrates & beeps, with the digital display - what is it, oh yeah - $1,700?

Coolest thing I ever tightened a fastener with...
No, I don't own one.
OTOH, the 3 Crapsman in my box cost me about $400 - even if I gotta wear my reading glasses to set them. In fact, the 540 pc Craftsman set I started my current box with, PLUS the double stack box they're in, cost about what this one wrench does. Granted, now, with everything that's in there - and in the garage, I got about $10K worth of stuff now. And if I'm in the middle of a project (and it's not 3AM) and need something I don't have in the box - I can walk into the Sears, 3 miles away. and usually grab it.
Sigh - this thread will degenerate into an all out, name calling, piss-fest - of the Craftsman versus Snap-On factions. Kinda like the EGR versus EGR Delete factions.
I LOVE SNAP-ON stuff. I get threatened with arrest for "lewd & lascivious behavior" from the woody I get, every time I step on the Snap-On truck. When I hit the Powerball tonight, I'm gonna buy me a whole truck, and all my Craftsman cohorts here will get one of these cool digital torque wrenches.
If I don't hit, I guess I'll just continue to use what I can afford. Though again - if I wrenched full time, I'd have Snap-On boxes.
Harley Specialty Tools (from Kent-Moore I believe), have a similar pricing structure (if you can even find a dealer that will sell you stuff - luckily I have one) - I've got about a grand in stuff that I'll use once or twice in a lifetime - but it's the ONLY stuff that'll work on certain jobs.
True Story: I'm coming home from the beach with this real hottie I picked up on the bike. I check the mailbox and start jumping up and down with joy.
She's like; "Hustler Hotties? SI Swimsuit Edition?"
Me: "NO, EVEN BETTER - NORTHERN TOOLS ANNUAL HARDCOVER EDITION".
She: "Tools?"
Me: " YEAH - THE HARDCOVER EDITION YOU DUMB SLUT!".
I guess it's a GUY THING...
Rick -
You do know stanley tool company owns mac? You can see the resemblence in both.
I owned snap on tools till my box got stolen about twenty five years ago. The snap on man
was such a prick, that when I got the insurance check I went straight to the mac man.
All snap on men I'v met are pricks. They think if you don't use snap on your not a mechanic.
I like mac and still buy them some, it depends on how much I think I may use the tool. -
My point is simply therr is going to be a considerable oulay expense in tool and shop equipment no matter WHAT you buy.
Personally, i prefer proto tools.
Buy quality tools with shank drive and you'll be set -
Isn't Proto rebranded snap-on? Or is that Kobalt...
-
You can catch some deals on Kobalt stuff when Lowes revamps the tool area in the fall & puts it all on sale/clearance. Other than that, our local one does not stock much.
Most of my stuff is Craftsman & never had a issue with them. Found a set they had a couple weeks ago that would fill in most all of what I needed. Asked the sales guy where that set was... "Oh we are sorry, but that has been discontinued." It was the set that actually had all the deep well sockets & some ratcheting wrenches w/o all the fluff that you will never use.
