The Horn

I remember being a kid and trying to get drivers to honk their horn, but in training I was warned to be careful about blowing the horn. I was told that it causes accidents. Parents don't pay attention to their kids and when you blow the horn, it scares Mom and they think u are being rude.
I generally don't do it, I just wave!

 

I drive team and many times my partner will be sleeping so I will not honk the airhorn for anyone. Not being rude just trying to let my partner sleep.

If my partner is awake and sitting in the passenger seat I will honk for kids.

I do recall one instance where a youngster was pumping his fist in the back seat and I obliged him by laying on the airhorn, not realizing that his mom was dozing in the front seat! She popped up, whirled around on the little kid in the back seat and commenced to smack the kid around. I kinda felt bad for that 1.

If I'm in a city or heavy traffic, no. Cuz the old man 4 cars back will probably have a coronary, wreck, and I'll get the blame. But in light traffic, yes.

 

I usually waved at the kids, and used the horn only as a warning device. However, I remember one afternoon during the mid-1970s when I was pulling a reefer somewhere in the deep south. The 318 Detroit was purring right along down a slight grade on a smooth blacktop two-lane. As I rounded a curve, I saw two barefoot boys in overalls, standing at the end of their long, red clay driveway. They were eating watermelon and pumping their fists. Who could resist?

 

Now that WAS funny. I've been on road trip (in my 4-wheeler), and always get a few cars passing me, and the wife/husband is in the passenger seat passed out. I always pace them, inch close to their lane (still staying within mine) and lay on my horn just to scare the p!ss out of them. It is funny seeing the driver get all upset.

Now, before i get 20 PMs from truckers saying "Better not do that in a big rig". Well duh....i might but just a tiny toot. ....or was that maybe the chili dog i got at the truck stop a few miles back.

 

It varies with me...

Not a day goes by that I don't get the request.. but I try to take a look at the driver. If it looks like he's actually DRIVING, as opposed to whatever it is normal people do at the controls of a car, I'll yank the cord.

In the city or the like, it'll be just a quick couple of toots.

Out in the country - yeah, Helloooooo Nurse!

If an adult asks, they get a dah-dah-dit-dit-dah-dah on the city horn.

 

Like I've seen a few others say, I'll blow my horn if I'm not in heavy traffic. It makes the kids happy, and who wouldn't enjoy that. I do remember with my trainer a kid was trying to get me to honk, I reached for the cord then remembered I was with my trainer. Looked over at him and he said to go ahead. I pulled the cord a few times and the mom (in the passenger seat) looked like she might've had a heart attack, before she realized her kid was asking for it.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm sometimes more tempted to blow the horn when they don't ask for it. Middle of the afternoon and some kid's sleeping in the passenger seat--it's just tempting. Of course, I have a "How's my Driving?" sticker, so I don't.

 

I have blown my HORN at nutty crazy four wheelers that do various stupid stuff. THEY get around an 18 wheeler and either are scared to death and slow way down, or speed up to cut ya off.......

 

Same here. Just a few days ago some four-wheeler was sitting at a stop sign, looked at me, looked the other way, looked right back at me, and pulled out in front of me. He then made it up to about 25MPH and kept weaving between the ditch and center line. Didn't smoke the tires or anything, but I must say he's lucky he did it to a driver who was paying attention. I let every four-wheeler out there know that semis can, in fact, stop on a dime--if the four-wheeler puts the dime on their dash and then proceeds to cut off a semi.
