The PC build thread

I'll be building a new one in the next 60 - 90 days. Going to use it at home. While I deal with being out of the truck. Due to medical. But I will be taking it back on the road. When I recover.

Any suggestions for a sturdy build. I want to be sure that the CPU doesn't over clock. Because NFS Payback crashes. If it does.

Will have around 2k. But don't have to spend that much. LOL

 

There are a ton of new slim notebooks that are around $1000 - 1100 that have some great specs , its about cheaper to buy a prebuilt than it is to piece one together now a days .

 

this is true. To an extent. I want to build so I can upgrade later. More cheaply. Rather than having to buy a new laptop or PC 5 years down the road.

 

I rebuild my home rig at least every 3-4 yrs so I completely understand . My gaming laptop is 5 yrs old now thats in my truck and it gets by on most games but Im ready for a new here soon .

 

I honestly really enjoyed building my first computer 2 to 3 years ago. So that is also a reason why I want to do it again. Plus this time. I'll not be so limited on the budget.

This way I can get a good rugged case and those support arms, forget what they are called, for it. For sure going to get a 1TB HD.

 

As far as laptops go I am in 100% agreement! In fact, I have been looking at an HP Pavilion laptop listed on Amazon. Because of the nature of a laptop, if something goes wrong it can be difficult to borderline impossible to fix. I am not someone that recommends desktops for truckers even though I know many that do use them. For home use, I am much happier with a desktop. I built this last year. If something breaks it can be fixed generally easily. The most expensive part of most systems is the video card. Because I do not game I don't need an expensive video card and right now have a Ryzen 4650G Pro processor that works super well for me. This is why I always recommend building for home use IF you feel like you can do it. The hardest part is getting everything matched up correctly!

 

Run an m.2 drive if you plan on taking it on the road. Also second moose's suggestion of integrated graphics, or if you decide on a graphics card, set it up on a flexible riser, vibration in the truck places a lot of stress on the motherboard. Likewise for cooling, either run an aio liquid cooler or something relatively short (stock ryzen air coolers are quite reasonable).

Above all
1, good airflow and at least clean it monthly
2, make sure you have a good pure sine wave inverter

 

Just wanted to add even with older PCs you can add a SSD to it really easy. I currently use an M.2 SSD inside an adapter for my OS in my Dell laptop.

Just to clearly a bit. Integrated graphics in the case of AMD systems has a big drawback. At least with mine the system is really fussy about the correct driver. If I use the driver Win 10 installs it cuts out a lot. In fact when I installed win 11 beta I had a hell of a time getting my video graphics stable.

 

To be fair the WHQL video drivers have always been "Hey the video displays, but don't actually try stressing it." It's always been recommended since Win95 to go get the drivers published by the OEM and install them.
