LOL, just back home from my last trip in Roehl Phase three.. this has been a week ago or so but I was down in Louisiana and headed back up north on I-55. It was night and I think in Mississippi but I swear I saw painted planes in the right lane of the Northbound Hiway at some point. They didn't look like arrows, they looked more like planes to me...any clue as to what those symbols mean or why they are there?
The plane lane

They are timing marks for highway patrol planes to judge your speed by.....You know, the bear in the air !!!
RockinChair Thanks this. -
They're painted there to trick the supertruckers into thinking they are going so fast, they are passing airplanes....and maybe they will slow down.
They tried using little UFO paintings, but too many new drivers were pulling over to volunteer for a roadside anal probe.
Screwed up the flow of traffic.RockinChair, dude6710, Elendil and 1 other person Thank this. -
thanks Hammer, I thought thats what they might be but just hadn't seen them anywhere else. I think they just use hash marks in Michigan. LOL, I think I39 in Wisconsin has a stretch where theres a sign look out for low fllying aircraft...like it's our job to avoid airplanes... still not sure if thats for dusters or a landing strip.

If you're talking about I39 20 miles south of Stevens Point they dust a lot of fields around there. I'm guessing the purpose of the sign is really to give people a heads up. You know, so people don't freak out when they are driving along texting, fixing their hair, and eating their egg McMuffin at 75mph - all at the same time - and look up and unexpectedly see a P-51 up ahead crossing their path a few feet above the ground. [Ok, I know they don't really use P-51's for crop dusting...]
I remember driving across Oklahoma and having a WTF moment when I saw a sign on I40 (I think) that said something like "DO NOT PICK UP HITCHHIKERS. THEY COULD BE ESCAPED CONVICTS"

Well you know there's that old theory that 1 in every 5 miles of the interstate system is designed to be perfectly straight and flat so it can also be used as emergency runways for B-52's during the Cold War. That's a myth of course.

All good answers....
Think I'll go with the bear theory! -
It would be interesting to see how our interstates would work in war. I remember when gulf 1 broke out, i was in the air guard at the time. suddenly trains with tanks and other military armor are on the railtracks along us131 in downtown grand rapids. And I remember seeing a lot of convoys out on the highway...that was only mobilization for the middle east too. A future civil war, minus nuclear, would be interesting too see how the road system works or doesn't. transportation and mobility makes and breaks wars.

I almost ran into a plane on top of wolf creek pass back in 1996. He couldn't make it over the mountain and clipped a tree which took about 2ft off of 1 wing and had to set it down on top of co160. I came around the corner and almost nailed him. Try explaining that to safety!!!!

Also in some staes they have painted lines on the side of the road so they can accurately gauge your speed from the air..
