The squelch works best When you're sitting at a shipper or a receiver or at a truck stop trying to listen to someone 50 feet away and you don't care about listening to somebody out the distance.
You can adjust it to where somebody more than 100 yards away won't break through your receiver making it easier to take a nap while you're waiting for someone to call your name.

This is classic Dunning Kruger effect. You think your radio can shoot sparks better than any other radio. The problem is that your tune may not be sending every watt out into the end of the antenna and the spark isn't as bright as it could be.

If you have to ask who's tune could produce the brightest spark, I don't think you can afford it.

My buddies can always tell it's me coming because my fiberglass antenna is glowing in the dark! During the day, they look for the smoking antenna. I'm such a good customer to Wilson, they supply me with a lifetime's worth of antennas. I'm their antenna tester. Ask anyone at any lunch counter. Puff puff pass.

One time I was at a keydown in North Carolina, the 32 pill class was on the line. All the sudden this Mckesson truck spins around in the parking lot, turns the squelch down and the rf gain up, then keys over both Suburbans.

Crazy part is the truck didn't even have an external antenna.

This one time, in the oilfield, I was hauling production water from a well with super high radiation. When I got to the disposal, all my lights shorted out, leaving me totally in the dark.

Being the crafty bugger I am, I unloaded my high NORM load thru a couple filter socks. When unloaded, I took the filter socks and hung them over my Wilson co-phased antennas plumbed into a Kraco CB radio bucking out 10k watts. Then I keyed down the mic with a rubber band and the filter sock/antenna arrangement lit the way through the rain and fog out of the badlands and back to Belfield.

I'd do it again if I had to.

Can anyone tell me why my hair is falling out and my toenails are green?

Bob Lazar outfitted it with Element 115 for me. Same stuff that powers the reactors on the flying saucers at Area S4.

I was headed to my last drop and hook one day. I was supposed to go to a yard sale and pick up a JC Penny cb with a swing mod.

Stupid truck I am in had an automatic but it was struggling to back the 60k coil on the 28' pup so I punched it. Single axle started spinning, broke two spring hangers and part of the axle. There I sit missing out on the radio of a lifetime, so I took some old coax and tied the spring up in place. Had some solder so I soldered the axle up and got the truck to the yard.

I've talked on that rado to Tiajuna on a dummy load with the squelch just right.
