Never you mind the fuel mileage.

50 years ago 5 miles to gallon is awesome mileage for desiel. Horsepower ratings were 1.3 or half what they are today. Today 6.5 miles a gallon is awesome when companies fail to spec 600 horse engines. Europe is already breaching 800 horse engines for commercial vehicles. You can almost take 1000 horse leopard battle tank model 1 engines and stick em in there.

It's shameful when the USA thinks that one or two miles per gallon improvement in heavy trucking is awesome. It always has been my position big horse engines burn less fuel doing less work than a wound out whipped 300 horse big cam that cannot get past 22 mph upgrade and will burn 30 gallons plus for the hour it will need to get over the 5 mile upgrade. It's less than a gallon per mile.

I can rant on, but frankly I quit caring long ago. Two tanks 340 gallons capacity under the cab, fill em every 30 hours and roll. 85,000 dollars spent in fuel to make approx half a mil in gross revenue. That's not too bad a return I imagine.

For the last time people.... Please please please please please please please understand this. The ELOG is not the problem! Yes, invasion of privacy, extra expenses, unnecessary... Etc I agree, I do like using it because I don't want to use a paper log. Now. Since we all will have them, let's once and for all get together and fight to change the stupid HOS which are the real PROBLEM in this matter. Since we're all going to be tracked/watched worse than people on the terror watch lists, let's try to change the HOS for the better. We need MORE flexibility and time to run as we please as long as we're being safe... No more wasting 2 days for a 800-900 mile load or other bs like it...

The HOS should be a guideline not the LAW! Where's the freedom? Have the safety department of the companies be involved in the driver habits and take care of the bad apples as they come. I'm sure the dispatchers etc get to now your running style and then YOU can choose how to run. (There's a small requirement that you grow some cojones here) and refuse unsafe loads or communicate better with dispatch to plan on how you run. Freedom can be achieved since we'll be tracked... We can get rid of HOS and drive/sleep as we see fit which is the way it should be....

For the neysayers understand that some of us are out here to make money. Give me a 75-80mph truck and freedom to run as I please and I can SAFELY and most importantly FREELY make my money and go home.

I'm grabbing my popcorn for the bashing :p

It's the HOS why are we the only industry that gets treated like kids. You don't see doctors, police officers, Ems, and many more having to take mandatory breaks and being told how many hours they can work a day or per week.

Few people are going to understand the connection you're making here. It's an excellent point that I have considered, but not seen articulated so well before.

Wanna know the irony of what you're pointing out? But for anything else, it will be the reason the ELD mandate unwinds. You're pointing out the honest drivers out there that handle electronics like they're approaching a live rattlesnake. Guess what? Just as many cops out there doing enforcement are the same way.
