YuP!
You're right Sportster.
Technology has come a long was in the last
10 - 15 years in that department. But the folks who drive 'em and like the sound to an UNmuffled exhaust system -- haven't, much.
Gawd bless 'em
The throaty sound of a V-8 Cat with straight stacks descending a long grade where the sound echoes and resonates -- is music.
Then, there are engine brakes that sound like sheep-dip.
Anyone who was there before a highway was built and the noise came -- I feel you're pain. I live in SoCal and was in the neighborhood before I-5 through Anaheim and before Disneyland too.
Highway 91 wasn't there yet.
I-15 was Millikan Ave. in Ontario, California until Norco made a deal with the state and traded real estate (read real houses) for a sewer system and the Interstate went through.
I moved to get away from I-5 and did -- then came the I-15 through town. Less than a mile from my house.
The ONLY thing I appreciate about that is, there's a short grade about 1 - 2 miles from me, and at night when it's quiet, I can easily hear, and appreciate, the sounds of an engine brake comin' down.
Noise or background music -- one thing for sure, it's progress.
Progress is also USING the technologies available to make life safer. Limiting their use just seems to be counter-productive.
If they keep complainin' about my engine brake -- I'm gonna go back to dragging anchor to back 'er down goin' down. And if I run outta anchors -- I'll use millstones.
BTW
I found The Jacob's Company's response to be very interesting.
NO JAKE BRAKES ALLOWED signs.
I smell a court case.
Thanx for an interesting post, Sportster.
the unnecessary usage of j-brakes, why????

Yeah, because we all know how "old school" prepass is....
-
I for one wish they would have a case make these one horse towns take theyre signs and stick them well you know where OUCH
Straight pipes and steering wheel holders made this happen.Using the Jake in town for fun not to stop.
-
Cat used to have a brake that worked off the engine oil and the flywheel >No noise<Just heated the oil up so you had to watch that on a long grade
-
Some people tried that where I live But it didnt work in fact I think they blow them more now.I like it makes the coyotes howl.
-
I guess thats why you can hear 4 wheelers boom boxes a mile away.I would rather listen to a JAKE BRAKE instead or a Harly D.
-
We used to call them parking lot truck drivers shift every gear they had then use their jake to slow down
-
Put their head between their legs and kiss their ### good bye
-
Im whith you Brickman no matter how great the new brakes are They cost a lot of money to replace and the Jake makes them last longer. But you still need to use them with wisdom.
