(Day 7) Pre-trip as usual at 7:30am and we had a recruiter come in from Werner. The morning started out chilly and windy but it ended up being a pretty nice day. I got the straight backing down now at about 90%. Surprisingly I can get my trailer in the cones for the 90 backing but I can't seem to keep my tractor inline with the trailer. I have more work to do on that but it clicked pretty easily. The offset backing is where I'm really struggling. With either the right or left offset I'm blinded on one side and it throws my perception off completely. I had to do 4 pull ups just to get the trailer in the cones and it still wasn't straight. Obviously I have more work to do with the offset but I'm not looking forward to tomorrow's weather to do it in. This is Charlotte, NC for you though. Second day of spring tomorrow and it's supposed to be coooooooold. For my improvements today I received a 96.25% for my backing "skills". Another good day of learning and improvements.
[Day 8]This morning was extremely cold. Buuuurrr. Everyone was huddled up trying to stay warm while doing pre-trip. We found out that there is a page (11-9) in the NC commercial driver's manual that we can actually can use during our pre-trip inspection test. Cool! More backing today and before lunch I had the offset, the 90, and the straight backing down. Then after lunch I couldn't get the 90 for anything. Ugh so frustrating because I know that I can do it. The offset and straight backing was still pretty decent for the rest of the day but that darn 90 lol. I was given my money so that I can go get my permit tomorrow. I'm going to do more studying tonight and try to get some rest. My clutch leg and knee is killing me. For backing, we use three '87 old Mack tractors and those clutches are STIFF. Anyway another ok day and now I'm looking forward to getting my permit tomorrow and resting this weekend.
Good Luck with your test tomorrow, dont worry to much about the 90 you'll get it just stay relaxed dont let frustration get the better of you.let us know how the test goes
My school was only about 8 guys. Only four people passed the first try on the state test. Guess who passed? The four people that paid cash for the school! Drop the, "If all goes well" type attitude. Be confident and positive! Few situations in my life have had me more nervous than the test day. I had lost my prior thirty year career and trucking was one of my few options. Study hard, jump in the seat every chance you get and you should do fine. Mikeee
