Now outdoors is something I know. I am outside all day, and half of the night seemingly, in WNY. Plus I do all my camping in the winter when the places are empty.

One thing. Cotton is the devil. It holds moisture against your skin.

Carhartt makes the most durable stuff I have found, EVER. The quality is good and the price is reasonable.

For boots, I recommend Rocky, Carolina or Georgia Boot. Stick with gore-tex and make sure the insulation matches the weather. I have some uninsulated, some 800 gram, some 1000 gram and 1400 gram Bear Claws for the really cold days. Make sure to avoid cotton socks too if you plan on being outside for any amount of time unless your feet never sweat.

Go natural fibers. If you are ever near a fire with synthetic fibers they will melt and stick to you. Stick to cottons and wools. Some of my best long underwear was from Wal-Mart and discount shelves. Cheap enough you can buy several pairs, and as long as you pick the right material it works just as well as the expensive guys. Just layer up. Have the first layer to be something that wicks moisture away from you. Wear other layers just for insulation and top it off with something that offers wind and moisture protection (tight weaves).

Also, work hard enough to keep your body heat up. You don't want to be a pylon out in the cold or you will freeze no matter how good your gear is
