Then that is what you explain to the companies, as that is what they are going to want to hear. Leaving yourself at unemployed with 3 dependents and no proof of income will not land you a job. Telling them this will clarify it.
I didn't post that to bash you, so please don't get the wrong idea. You have to look at it from the companies prospective. Leave nothing blank, because your application will go in the trash if you do.
If you don't know how to file taxes then go to some place like H&R Block. Get your 1099s filed for those years because the IRS is going to become your new best friend in this industry. Word of mouth doesn't work in this industry. You need proof of income. Get those taxes filed.
They wont hire me!

Bullhaulers wife , Most of us have not been raised with a silver spoon either, At 26 years old and the father of 3 children plus being a veteran of the Army most of us would assume the the OP has enough drive and determination to go out and provide for them. Instead of whinning about his misfortunes in his very short adult life, if the Army teaches you one thing it teaches you to be self-reliant. If life gives you lemons , make lemonaide, don't stand around griping about it, I don't know the OP, not at all, but it just seems that his generation wants to run home to Mom and Dads instead of fighting back and doing for themselves...call me harsh or cold-hearted if you want, but life's hard..sometimes you just have to get up and fight back.....Ghost Rider was only pointing out what the OP should at 26 already know....Mommy ain't always gonna be around to wipe his nose and say "its OK Mommies here" time the OP heard that message
Ghost Ryder Thanks this. -
Still no reply about the type of discharge, or length of service. He may have not have made it out of bootcamp, for all we know.
Being in combat is not what I was asking about...and I'm not trying to dog you. I have an honorable discharge, but was not exactly a model solider.
You will need to straighten out your unpaid/unfiled taxes. You'll have to do it via an enrolled agent, not a normal CPA/tax person. There may be somebody willing to do it at a reduced rate or free, due to your family situation.
For now, I suggest getting any kind of normal job you can, with a normal paycheck, and taxes taken out, preferably with benefits. Get some recent work experience doing ANYTHING, that shows up on the radar, preferably with good references, then consider working toward going to Driver school.
It's real easy to get into DEBT, trying to get a job driving a truck. Companies will lie to you, and leave you stranded in worse places than your roofing job, did.Ghost Ryder Thanks this. -
Yup. This is all I was trying to do. I'm not bashing him by any means. Heck, I don't care about his previous employment personally. He has to show that to current employers if he wants to drive a truck. Nothing to verify income + 3 dependents = suspicious. Even if you live with mom and dad.
Bottom line is that if you live with your mom and dad then your kids are not your dependents. Not trying to be quick to jump to conclusions, but I don't think trucking for you would be the right choice at the moment. As others have said get a pell grant and go to school. As a family man it isn't about just you any more. You have to do whats right for your family. -
He said he was self employed so he must have had income . If he doesn't understand tax regulations and forms he'll be overwhelmed by HOS , logbooks , bills of lading , etc .Ghost Ryder Thanks this.

i live in georgia. i have 5 kids and the fourth starts the spring quarter of college tommorrow at a military college. i have wading thru enough pell grant, financial aid, tuition assitance programs for the oldest 4. the second oldest did cdl school at a technical college in georgia. its very inexpensive and they have them located all over the state. the cost can be paid ny georgias hope scholarship which provides tuition grants for college and tech schools. they recently lowered the standards for tech college assistance, basically if you are breathing you qualify for a tech school assistance. same way with pell grant the amount is based on income, the lower the income the higher the assistance.
the only disqualify is convictions for certain offenses etc. also with honorable military service the gi bill would pay for this easily.
i myself have helped several young men get into tech school under the cdl program and have even let a few use my truck for road tests in other circumstances.
what i see is some of the questions i asked left unanswered, the same as some others have asked, which honestly are the most important as far as getting assistance for cdl school.
now, if he could answer the questions about his type of discharge, any other convictions he might had, etc. i could tell him exactly what he needs to do to get the tuition assistance he needs in georgia.
and he needs to get tax advice, even with minimal income , you can qualify for earned income credit. however i assumed by saying he didnt file a return, he needed to have filed one.
now, wannebeadriver answer those, and i can guide you properly, but its got to be the truth or you will hit a dead end. -
and my first kid was born when i was in the army, i saw her born. i was in germany , my wife went with me there, and the army medical paid for it in nuremburg. seems like geeting out of the army to see the baby born cost ya some good insurance, unless ya werent married.
and some advice with 3 kids , dont have anymore til you get employment. -
personally , i would not recommend h&r block, the only people they look out for is h&r block, so you end up getting hosed.... If your gonna pay find a cpa who will work with you.... If worse comes to worse the irs has people who will do your taxes for you also.. But then again its gonna more than likely end up in favor of the irs.... There are also plenty of volunteer organizations who help folks do their taxes free of charge , start doing some research and look around remember what i said your brain is not a weight for your pillow , use it..... Good luck.... With all the good advice you have gotten you have plenty of trails to choose from... So from all of us wishing you well and trying to help , get with the program and git er done....Ghost Ryder Thanks this. -
Because, with all the crap that gets spewed by many, over the years we have become quite cynical. Maybe not fair, but it is what it is.Ghost Ryder and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this.

It doesn't have to be underhanded, he could be totally clueless, which raises other problems.

I used to run a large messageboard, and my spidey senses tingle when somebody like this posts, not giving full information or answering questions.
If he needs to feed his family, and finds its time to 'man up'....trucking may be a viable option, but not if you approach it as a fantasy world, and expect things to fall in your lap.
There are resources out there if you look, and work at them.
The 3 kids you have now have a better chance of growing into good adults if they see Dad working to support the family, and walking the same nasty line all normal people have to. It sucks, but the option is living the way you are now.
I have two siblings now with some problems due to not paying taxes.
One is essentially disabled, and almost at retirement age, with no resources or income. He hasn't filed taxes in years, his house is being auctioned off in a few weeks due to foreclosure, and he owes the IRS thousands. Guess what happens to his SSI when he files?
The other is facing a nasty divorce after a LONG marriage. His wife worked a little under the table during the marriage, but they covered it up. HE has a good income. Guess who will be paying support to a lady who essentially could support herself?
I've also had to deal with the IRS after not filing taxes a few years, been there, done that, got the bloody tattered T-shirt.....but I did it.
Stuff comes back to haunt you, and if you try to avoid it scurrying around like a rat, you kind of get used to living like a rat.
Don't assume the guys here who are on your case won't help you if you honestly need it and want it.
I'm guessing most here don't like BS.Ghost Ryder, superpet39 and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this.
