Well, it's been a couple weeks. Still like what's going on.
I hauled my first flatbed load ever. Seems every so often we haul trailers to events for a lighting company. I hauled some huge lighting scaffold down to Norfolk, Va. Had to run a log book for this one. 555 miles round trip. I thought the load would pay more than it did, but was an easy drop and B\T back.
Been hauling some pharmaceutical stuff out of Astra Zeneca in Newark, De. with our lone reefer trailer. These pay pretty good.
Also been hauling BMW of North America motorcycles out of Easton, Pa and back to Forward Air in Folcroft, Pa. Price tag for these loads average over $500,000.00. Definitely most expensive loads I've ever hauled. Round trip is about 180 miles.
We definitely do a wide range of freight and runs. Last week I went to UPS and picked up a HazMat load in those cargo plane containers. Took it to Dulles airport in Va in that miserable rain storm last Wednesday. Got escorted out to the plane for off loading. Back up to a huge roller platform with my roller trailer. Luckily it stopped raining for the off load. Played hell in the rain trying to put placards on the trailer, what a pita! I had to go find an overpass to pull under to dry the area for placards.
Boss is a good guy. He was a driver, so he knows what it's like out there. So far, I've only worked one Saturday, so weekends are free. Been averaging about 50hrs a week. Since getting my HazMat, pay has also jumped.
Someone mentioned pay and benefits. I'm a sub. Which wasn't what I really wanted, but it is what it is. Some stuff is hourly, but most is by the load. Some loads really suck, but most are pretty easy. Live load and unloads are where you get hung up waiting for people. Luckily haven't had too many of these.
Anyway, weekends off, 5 mile commute to work, home every day/night. It's good so far. More money than what I was doing OTR, and not spending money to live on the road. My best week was $1,375.00, my worst was my first week, $785.00. This week might be my best. I took some extra freight this week that normally I would have said ''no thanks''. Boss was in a bind so I took it.
Think I found a home.
