I'm seriously thinking about giving up driving the big rigs and doing pilot car driving. I'm thinking of operating in Washington state and doing the rear position as it seems the easiest to do.

I'll take any thoughts my fellow truckers have on the matter. I might do an employee or independent thingy---haven't decided.

Thanks and, as always, you guys and gals are great.

Have you ever done any oversize yourself? Always nice to have experience from the drivers perspective to help doing your job.

Check with your Local Community College, sometimes they offer courses for this. I know our local one does.

Tough cut throat business to get started in. Wa. State you need to be certified for
You will have to take a class. About 8 hours. Then have a vehicle to setup up correctly. Not just a blinky light and four red rags hanging off the bumper.
Then finding work and waiting 30 days or so to get your money. Most do pay in a week, but have enough in the bank for 2 months or more for all your bills

Got all that and enough backup to survive the gaps.

So, how do pilot cars find business if they want to be independent? Will someone hire me if I have no real track record other than having driven osow?

The other issue is that if you want to be a rear pilot there is less work. In Montana for instance, when only one car is needed for width it will be in the front.

Tough nut to crack on getting started
Most of us like people that have been doing pilot car work for some time
It will take alot of knocking on trucking companies doors. Worse case sign up with Comdata pilot car services. Kinda the Swifts of pilot cars. Find a pilot car broker to sign up with
Now seeing how you high centered, that is something that will happen to all of us
Mine not as bad as yours. But it happens
As a pilot that is something you will need to look out for also for your driver
