Hey all, I recently retired from active duty and have been working as a Warehouse/Fleet manager for a construction company. I'm pretty unhappy with my job and have been thinking about getting my CDL and changing careers. I'm having a hard time though with having 3 young kids at home and already spending quite a bit of time away from them while I was on active duty. I'm local to Salt Lake City Utah and don't really know how to go about looking for a local job to see if it's something that will work for my family and me. I know I'll probably have to drive OTR and be away for a few months while training, but would hope to find something that I'm home 3 or 4 nights a week after that. This forum is awesome and has already provided me with a ton of information. I think I would like to drive an auto transport or something similar. Thank you all so much in advance!

Swift has a Terminal in West Valley. Actually spent the night there last night. Unsure if they use local drivers at this terminal, but they do at other ones. So, you might give them a call to see.

Welcome aboard, and we thank you for your service. I think trucking is a viable alternative for retired service personnel, and you don't need to go OTR, even though, when starting out, the jobs are usually limited to OTR, it has the biggest turnover, and where drivers are needed most. Local jobs come up, but usually OTR drivers snap those up quick. You could skip all that by working as dock help and move some trucks around, but that takes a while. I've known several drivers got their start working at a freight house. You mentioned kids, EHHHNNNN( buzzer sounding), that, my friend, will be your biggest hurdle. Those kids are at an age where they need you, TO BE THERE, not on a screen, I say our current worlds problems are because of dads not being around when they should be. I was a regional driver all my life, and believe me, having my kids see me at the soccer game or HS play, made all the difference. I see kids without a father, and they are a mere shell of what they could've been. Good luck, DON'T go OTR. The kids will be out the door in no time, then you can go OTR, if you want. The discipline that you may be used to in the military, the lack of will absolutely shock you in an OTR setting.

I don't know how much experience they want. The job of hauling fuel for loves or Pilot. Been told it's easy. Also easy to make over $100K/yr. Home daily.

Thank you all for the responses so far! Yellow sounds like it might be what I'm looking for, does anyone have any experience working for them to get my start?
Hauling fuel would be one of the things I would love to get into, but I'm not sure if they hire right out of school. Also, I've been just looking at putting myself through school instead of having a company pay for it, what are people's thoughts on that? Is it a better option than say signing on with Yellow and going through their school?

Oh, I'd be careful with Yeller, part of YRC.( Yellow/Roadway) They've been in trouble for years, and are currently $880 MILLION dollars in debt. I read, there was even a question of them still operating. Starting with a union company, may not be the best idea. Union outfits, I think, are on the way out. Plenty of others, though, stuff like Sysco, or any food service, is physically demanding, but you might be used to that, and no more secure trucking job today than food service.

Yellow is secure and recently has purchased other LTL companies to add to the portfolio.
Yellow has always had a reputation for being on the verge of shutting down, but it never happens. That's been going on for at least 50 years.
Yellow is growing and that's the reason for opening their own CDL schools nationwide.

Well, with all due such and such, I'm not so sure I'd want to work for a company that has been in trouble for 50 years. These big companies buy and sell smaller outfits like we buy hot dogs. Just because they add a fledgling company to their rosters doesn't mean it will save them. The bigger the loss for these big companies must benefit them somehow in the end. When I had my union bread job, in the 1.5 years I was there, our checks came from 3 different outfits, meaning, the company was sold 3 times, AND,,, they ended up firing all the union drivers anyway and brought in outside carriers. I have little faith in any big company today, especially a union one. It's a shame, but our country seems to have moved on from what a union company used to stand for,,except in L.A., of course.
