Okay .So call some and make some brokers to give me regular loads . My goal is so get some direct shippers that only need me like a few times a month I don't want to make the brokers feel like I'm going away from them Also I want to try and be home every night. I know it can be done. I also know weekend loads are few and far between.
We would all like to be home every night. You can be flexible and do it when it's there making bank. Or you can do what everyone else does and do it really cheap. Freight trends never last. You need the flexibility to go out a day or 3 maybe even up to a week or more at times. I do that. If local runs are hurting for trucks good for me i'll be home at least every other night. If not i'm out and back or at least back by the weekend. My line in the sand is home every weekend but I only do it if I can make money. I'm not out here to work for free. In the beginning I had to learn the lanes and how to do that. No-one can tell you how. You're going to have to figure it out. Atlanta is going to be a tough market locally. I was talking to some guys doing air freight down there as o/o for $35 an hour 60 hours a week. Drive back and forth hauling loads 6 miles all day back and forth. Really the driver thought it was as good as gold. I guess so, to each his own. Market down there for van freight is good sometimes and bad others. You could live in much worse areas. It should be easy to do out and backs down there, home weekends, and make great money - learn your lanes. You could pick up on some good local area work when the supply of trucks is tight and they can't find enough o/o for cheap.
I agree with you 100% I drove produce for a while in 2005 from west to east it paid good but backhaul was terrible , then I started to dispatch for my uncle west to east lanes it's great during season but only one way . And it's horrible coming back to Cali. I currently got my own authority and have two trucks , you just have to run a bunch of lames to see what is right for you these days .
