I primarily bought my truck and trailer to haul my own equipment. At the time I thought I would haul some for hire when things were slow or maybe haul things to avoid dead heading with my equipment. I didn’t haul anything for hire in 2018 and think I hauled two loads in 2017.
Having the authority doesn’t cost anything except that my insurance charges a lot more when I have an active MC number than when I don’t. I have no immediate plans on hauling for hire but who knows what the future holds.
Should I hang on to it or let it go?
Thinking of dropping my authority

Hang on to it. Start utilizing it more.
KB3MMX Thanks this. -
Hang a price tag on it. Have you seen the classifieds lately?
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
No - I haven't looked. Did not even know you could sell it.
My best guess is it is costing me around 3k a year in additional insurance cost. Isn't much at all if I used it but since I don't it adds up.
My main gig is my bread and butter and has a very erratic schedule. It is impossible for me to plan. I never really knew how to go about finding loads and whatnot. One guy I talked to said he could have steady loads for me all the time but he needed a commitment. I can't do that. If I haul anything it will have to be a last minute spur of the moment type deal. -
Also you can keep your authority and just render it in active until your ready to use it again.
You don’t need to pay insurance on it when it’s inactive. -
3000/yr is nothing. Keep it as I said.
AlexanderK, TruckRunner and KB3MMX Thank this. -
I’d have to agree with Hulld, if your not using it why pay for it. Going inactive gets my vote, there if you need it later.

Bdog, can you PM me when you get a free minute? I'm about in the same situation as you are (not looking to inactivate MC or sell,) just similar situation with the business model, that's all. Thanks. -
It's kind of a toss-up really, and I wanted to deactivate my authority 2 years ago when I was in a wreck caused by some jerk that's actually still pending in litigation. The lady I spoke with pertaining to the deactivation process advised me NOT to do that, just wait it out because when you do that (suspend your MC) it sends a red flag to the FMCSA and usually triggers an audit to find out why you're doing it.They look at it solely as "someone trying to pull something" is how she worded it to me. They're not operating in the common sense mode, they're operating in government mentality mode.
In my case I wasn't really excited about making a truck payment along with a big insurance payment while waiting for these idiots on both sides of my accident case from insurance companies to lawyers to decide what to do. It cost me thousands out of pocket to maintain that stinking MC authority and I wasn't even working. Looking back, I'd probably deactivate it the next time and just take the chance on the audit. What are they gonna do in the long run...take my birthday away? I'm so beat up from it all that'd be the victory lap anyways, LOL. -
I can’t figure out how to send a PM ?
