So heres a question, anyone know how it is working for conway, that seems like my better choice, because its in Columbus, starts out at 19.60/hr, anyone know if theyre union, and also, how far up could i expect my pay to go up?
YRC, seems like a good company, heard thats one of the better ones out there, But not sure about moving to akron, maybe I can visit the one in columbus, and talk to them in person.
Any other company recomendations?[/QUOTE]
I enjoy working for conway. No they are not union. Pay maxes out at around 25$/hour at about 5 years if I remember correctly. There is low turnover there. Talk to some of their drivers, most are happy there. -
just so you know YRC is having finiancial trouble. To avoid closing the Union agreed that the company can take 15% of everyones pay out of their check. so if they pay 24 then take 15% back, they are basicly paying $20.40. Still good money, just something to consider.

Low turnover rate? it isnt that low, higher than most companies. And yes they are non-union, and have many anti-videos about the union... Im not going there about it though
YRC just extended the contract for the paycuts for another 2 years, and even took away the pensions. But at the same time tried buying ABF, over a 100 brand new tractors, brand new trailers right from the factory, not refurbs... Really dont know whats going on with all this. At the smaller terminals though its very very rare to get a line haul bid right away, generally all the senoir guys want them as all it is pretty much holding a wheel, some end of the line terminals you will do drop hooks, but mostly you just go to a hub and layover... at least by us its like that, majority of the terminals go to Akron for layovers -
Well, as a P&D driver for almost 18 years the drawback would be the quality of LTL freight is getting worse. Too many "No- Dock" stops that you have to man handle at residences and strip malls. The Plus side , If you like a routine day you will see the same customers sometimes 2x a day for del. in the am then P/U in the afternoon. I know when and where i'm taking lunch and who i wil be BS ing with on a daily basis. I'm an old fart now so i like routine. On a side not, even a non union regional LTL carrier pays better then an OTR Job.CenutryClass and Buckeye91 Thank this. -
I forgot to mention, my particular route is a liftgate route so ill bump an actual dock maybe 5 or 6 times in 55+ stops for the week, mostly its backing into parking lots or blocking a lane of traffic

Well I though about applying now to the Conway in columbus. But I think I'm going to hold off and just stick it out a year here. I'll have more companies I can apply to if i am here for a year. Not to mention the student loan will be paid off. I just have to stick it out OTR for winter.

Thats actually not a bad idea. getting a full winters worth of OTR is a major confidence builder for any driver not to mention more experience under your belt. -
Marksteven Thanks this.
