I got a third lane violation while avoiding an accident near youngstown on I80 last year. Little town of Newton Falls was as bad as the misinformed trooper. Ended up settling for a tail light ticket....they still got their revenue and I avoided the moving violation

Little update, I have contacted an attorney and I should know a lot more about how things will turn out in a few days.

Update, I have learned two lessons over the last couple months. One, when in doubt, stay outta the left lane in Indianapolis. Two, fight your tickets no matter how bleak people say your chances are.
I hired an attorney and I will be paying for a seat belt violation. The moving violation will stay off my record, third lane ticket is gone.
Thank all of you for your advice and concern.Diesel Dave and 123456 Thank this. -
The 3rd lane laws are a bunch of shenanigans IMO. Why can't I pass other vehicles in that lane going slower than me, when that is the purpose of creating multiple lane highways? I can see the law meant for trucks that linger in that lane, but I'm taking it if I need to pass someone.
-
Why would you pull over there to "let them by"?
If they want to race I guess it's up to them to find a lane without a truck in it but it sure as hell isn't my job to get out of their way.
As tempting as it can be to get over there if I need to pass someone, I'm not willing to take the risk of getting a ticket just to gain a small amount of time...It's not worth it.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
True. I still think some states need to reconsider that law for variable purposes. If traffic isn't that heavy, I don't see a problem with trucks using the 3rd lane to make a pass. It's the idiots who linger there I see a problem with.

I agree that the laws are stupid....BUT!
As long as there are rude, stupid truckers that'll hog the left lane for their own convenience if they let us use it, You'll never convince certain states to let us use it.
I don't see us getting any closer to getting rid of rude, stupid truckers right now...Do you?THBatMan8 Thanks this. -
I just wanna know if we can't use the lane, do we get to pay less road tax? I'll settle for 2/3 of the rate if I can only use 2/3 of the road!
-
Most of the states that I have lived in all wanted trucks to stay in the right 2 lanes when there are 3-4 lanes available. Unless you must navigate for an exit.
-
Nope. As long as companies need to lower their hiring standards to keep up with customer and FMCSA demands, you will always have the rude, stupid, clueless truckers.
