    Google is your friend.

The current crop of Uniden radios is using a custom chip for their frequencies, and they can't be taken out of band like they used to. This is likely due to FCC pressure; too many people operating outside of the CB channels.

Honestly, you are better off using a stock radio with an outboard amp if you need power. I recommend against operating "freeband" (really misnamed; it can cost you a large bundle of money if you are caught operating there).

If you're worried about having it modded it depends. I havn't read though all the mods you're looking for but if you just want more power I'd say just get a kicker (linear amp) Yes they're illegal but anything over 4 watts without an FCC license is illegal. Personally I don't want a modded CB I don't need to talk to somebody 40, 50, even 100 miles away about the only thing I'd use it for is frying some foreigner's radio because he refused to speak english on 19. I can get (with the right conditions) 5 miles out of my galaxy which suits me well gives me enough time to ask or answer what I need too and tell the guy/girl I'm talking to to have a safe trip. If I traveled for a company and had people I talked to regularly I'd probably consider modding mine or buying a kicker but not right now it's all personal preference though and all depens on who you want to talk to. Texas star makes good amps though and I'd kill for a sweet 16 if I could find one at a decent price.

I am not looking to mod or do anything illegal, I just want a fancy radio with SSB and lots of options, I am not one to ever break the law , (knowingly anyway) So between the Uniden 980 and the Galaxy DX-959 what would yall get if you had to choose between the two?

I prefer the galaxy but uniden is good as well. As for the illegallity I ment no disrespect and didn't want to imply that you were trying to break the law just didn't know if you knew that pushing power past 4 watts was technically illegal in the FCC's eyes. That was all I ment by that. It's nice to have the fancy stuff no doubt and either radio will suit you well it's just a matter of what you want to do and which you would prefer. My suggestion. go to your local t/s that's got both radios take them out of the box and compare hold them. see which one you will like better. I will say this about the 959 they're a pain in the arse at night because they're not back lit and there's so many knobs and switches it can get confusing at night if you don't have it memorized or have a light right above your radio so you can see the labels. But other than that It has been a good radio for me and I love not having to calibrate it. But it's all a matter of preference. Buy one, mod it, and then in a year or so buy the other, mod it, and compare the 2. see which one you like better and sell the other one.

Currently, I'm looking at the Uniden 980. Galaxy radios are known to drift in frequency. I know that the clarifier mod will take care of that, but I intend to have a bone stock AM/SSB CB in the truck... I have a 100W ham rig if I need "moar power"...

I have been looking further into that uniden and they are not as reliable and made by some guy that is not that familiar with cb's, also it is mostly digital so if something goes wrong harder toget it fixed... Also have heard issues with it and that most get it for the looks of changing colors.. I am going with galaxy or cobra for better reliability as I was thinking uniden for looks but have got past that and want quality instead... I suggest you research it more before buying the uniden watch the reviews on youtube like I did made me change my mind... Thanks

These guys talking about being illegal, the FCC could careless about the CB band these days truthfully. Only way you'll get caught running some power is if you bleed on 911, hospital, or bleeding on a HAM operator.

Funny; I've also been looking into the 980 and have not seen any comments about poor reliability. In fact, from what I've seen, quite the opposite. The radio seems to have been made to survive a high vibration environmnent (like a truck).

The only two problems that people are having are not being able to use it on illegal frequencies, and it does have an annoying beep on every button push. (The beep can be silenced, though.)

Spot-on frequency, excellent audio... the design team appears to have known exactly what they were doing.
