The Calumet 76 was the worst! Underage prostitutes, my brother saw a girl get her throat cut, my dad and his friends sent two girls home, after they "hid out" with us. I had to have a grown male escort, just to go to the bathroom.
"I still like to stop at Lee Hi at exit 195 off I-81 in Virginia. The food is still good but you can't see it from the freeway. Most of us who visit them have been doing so for many years. That are about a mile from I-81" They still fuel your truck for you, good stop, but the food isn't as good or we're not as hungery
Glad all you guys have fond memories of truckstops. As a girl, in the 70's, I HATED truckstops. They were nasty, dangerous and loaded with pedos. I refused to go on the truck with my dad. Refused to learn to drive. It was no place for a young lady. At least young ladies can go in a truckstop, these days. The good-ole-days weren't that great.
There was good and bad back then, just as now. I think what I miss more than anything is the attitude of the average driver. People would actually help you a couple of decades ago. Now, it all about me, me, me.My wife was with me a couple of years ago and we stopped at the Flying J in Knoxville, TN. A guy came in on her. Apparently, the door didn' t lock properly. The guy brought the maintenance guy with him and I stopped them before they both went in on my wife. She isn't able to go with me any more, but she refused to stop at that Flying J since then. They are very lucky that they decided NOT to go in on my wife.
My wife can't ride with me any more due to health reasons, but she had on several ocassions had them walk in or found them in the ladies room. I have seen the ladies room why can't they tell the differance, o it must be the sissy guy that pee all over the mens seat. I know like at the T.A's you can make a wrong turn with the way they are set up but come on.
There is a few good mom&pops around. I like [the name slips me now] the one heading west on 10 just inside the Al. line, the one with the train wreck. Little pricey but good food, cool set up, lots of parking, and a good chaplin. Stop in and see David sometime a x driver due to health.
I have a soft spot for Calumet. Every time I drive by I think of the times there. How about "Boondocks" in Iowa? Still open but sure not like the old days. The Union 76 on Hiway 12 [I-94] and Hiway 120 on the outskirts of St. Paul MN? Had a favorite small joint in Vagas on the North side coming into town, lunch counter type sitting. andy
