This is why you put more than 2 chains on a coil

10 chains of grade 70 5/16 chain is 47,000lbs of securement. If a driver secures for 100% of the weight, then 10 chains it is.
In the case above of 4 coils at 12000lbs per coil, I wouldve done 3 chains maybe 4 each. Unless the trailer allowed for j hooks, then it wouldve been 3 chains and a strap or two over the top. Just my preference

You only need to secure for 50% of the weight wth indirect securement. And ya, if you only carry 5/16ths you need more than the guy that carries proper equipment for the job.

5/16 is part of proper equipment, you might carry 3/8 chains, another might carry 1/2 chains. I know you only have to secure for 50%, again you do it your way, I do it mine, on coils I will always secure for 100% of the weight

I never said not to. Throw 10 chains on every coil for all i care. Just don't try to tell the rest of us that's necessary, cause it aint.

I don't recall ever telling anyone what they were doing was wrong. I only stated what I'd do. Calm down killer.

I agree I use to get laughed at when I loaded lumber at the saw Mills... Threw 20straps total (all I had) including have the lift driver lift the top bundle so I could throw a belly on each section but my #### never moved... I had no worries about squeezing threw a light at the last second cause I didn't want my load to shift.... That #### wasn't moving if I "could stop" I did never know when a by the book coop is sitting around the corner ( Wich BTW is what I hate about calling bulk bags of sand in a van.... No way to secure it properly got to arpach every light well below the limit and still hope it doesn't change and if it does hope your not to close or a cop isn't watching.... I Know I'm rambling here but I think you guys can piece together my meaning

If that is what happened, then the coils to stay on the truck to the point that they did, says the securment was reasonably good for the load.

    Yes, for 12k coils.

What exactly, is overkill? This insinuates that there is such a thing as "too much securement"

    Please see above statement.

Also, are you willing to tell me the company you drive for so that I can avoid being near any of those trucks at any given time? I'd rather not be around you in case your 2 chains on a 12k coil snap.
