This is why you put more than 2 chains on a coil

3/8 G70 chain has a 6600 lb wll...meaning that only 1 chain meets the 50% threshold, and 2 chains has the wll exceeding the weight of the coil. 5/16 G70 chain has a 4700 lb wll...so 2 chains exceeds 75% of the weight of the coil, and with 3 chains, the wll surpasses the weight of the coil.

How many chains would YOU throw per 12K coil? X4 coils for a full load. Keep in mind, you need ample places on the trailer to attach all of those chains...so when you start throwing too many chains, you run out of places to hook them, or in order to hook them all up you start using 1 spool or stake pocket per chain instead of 2 thereby reducing the wll of the attachment point...meaning it isn't doing you a #### bit of good doing the extra work throwing those extra chains because the wll of each is reduced.

Every load can kill you. Thats why you drive like you got a brain.
I get a giggle out of these tmc, western express, melton type carriers i see at mills. Throw on twice the amount of securement cause their trainer says so, but then take corners like they are driving a sports car and tailgating through heavy traffic at 65 mph all while reading facebook on their phones.

Highway Sailor and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this.

Perhaps, but a coil can do it relatively easily when one doesn’t respect those.

Bad driving habits notwithstanding of course, in fairness I’m pretty sure I probably would throw a few extra chains too were I in the position of just starting out with those.

I guess what I've learned today is that there is no middle ground. Everybody uses ten chains per coil or they use two.

Must have a well stocked chain rack to carry 40+ chains and binders: what if they loaded 8 coils at 6k? 80 chains n binders?

Glad I don't haul coils: I'd have to carry 1,500lbs of chains n binders "just in case" I got a 8 coil load :0

Dude seriously? If you're going to interject common sense here your not going to be welcome.
