Ok, had another thought. How about the Cobra 148 versus the Galaxy 949 and 959, versus the Uniden Grant? The 959 has a counter display at least, but the roger beep and talkback are more annoyances then perks to me. Which has more potential?

We Install the SD1446 60 Watt final in the old Grants and Cobra148s and you have no problems. Also can install them in Galaxy radios.Stay away from the Amp boards all the stray RF they put out and no way to cool them really is a bad thing. In our mod we add a Galaxy heat sink and thermal switch fan on the back of the radio.Never have had one fail or come back for repair.

How often do truckers use ssb? Is it worth having?
-
Its not private but fewer people eavesdrop on sideband.
The main reason I have SSB is I like the reception, and I had them back in the 70s. -
I wish some of my buds had Sideband, I would like to try it out . Most of the guys I work with have AM only.

COBRA 148 GTL is a very good radio, especially the older ones, not powerhouses, but hey thats what linears are for.
Watch out for one that have been Super Mod'd, makes them virtually useless on ssb.
If you talk a lot of side band, look at having the clarifier unlocked for more slide on rx / tx -
I have a Cobra 148 GTL NW ST and it is one of the best radios
I have ever had.
I can leace the squelch and gain all the way up, hear no staic, and
it pulls in awesome.
I allso reaches out and touches.
