Running flat bed I have had occasions where I need to lock in the rear axles and go off road, muddy, sandy, rocky,.. you name it. Despite the obvious fuel savings from a single screw, the need for a second drive axle out weighs the fuel savings. Calling for a wrecker to pull you out can run minimum $500 - $1000. I've never got stuck. But I used to run wrecker back in the late 80's and I know where my money makers were. I loved pulling trucks out of the ditch after they slide off the icey roads. It was almost always $1500+ and that was 25 yrs ago.

    It wasn't about fuel.
A setup like that will stop much shorter in the rain as both steer and drive axle have load on them.

But you need to know what you need to run your operation.

I will give this advice,if you buy a new truck i would buy one with diskbrakes.
And if you get your own trailer, install a lift axle on the first axle off the trailer.
Again it will help in braking.

I think overall there are some misconceptions goin' on here.....and as far as air discs go.......they are not a silver bullet. If you run in salt, slush, sand and crap in the winter time drums are MUCH more forgiving and easier to maintain. I'd like air discs to have a few million more refined miles before they are shoved off as being perfect for the North American market.

So in the +12y they have been running them as standard on all tractors in the EU, they have learned nothing?
As far as safety goes, there is no drum that comes close because no drum ever stays a perfect circle.
They all go oval, some more then others but ALL change.
And with disks it doesn't matter as the brakeclaw can slide should the disk warp a little.(haven't seenany warped disks yet)

The Pete 386 I had was equipped with an air ride over a mono leaf spring up front. It also had disc brakes on the steer axle only.

I noticed no difference in the stopping power as compared to an all drum set up.

I do my own brakes,.. and my accident was not from any mechanical fault. Disc or drums,.. once the tires lost traction,.. there was nothing I could do. I was essentially hydroplaning on a thin surface of water.

I do like disc brakes more,.. but its not a deal breaker for when I decide to buy another truck. Drums have served me very well over the years.

The major plus to disc brakes, is that DOT can not inspect them. There is no way to measure them like they do drums.

You take that feeling of disgust and self loathing in your guts, grab it with both hands and resolve to be better. That is all you can do. Just don't let it control you, don't let the post traumatic stress make you less of a man by controlling you, make it make you a better man by tackling it head on and learning from your mistakes.

You've been through the looking glass, if you weren't shook up there would be something wrong with you.

Now I am sure if John Wayne were here he'd say something like

"Pilgrim, you just need to get your self back up on that horse and ride, the longer you wait the worse its gonna be."

A 35,000 empty weight pulling a step is OK,,you want a 13 or 18 spd,,auto or stick is OK,,500 hp is enough for any where and overweight loads,

DO NOT BUY and XL trailer,,I had 2 and mega problems with both and the worst warranty help , It takes 4-7 weeks to get them to fix warranty problems.
A great step and with the best warranty in Doonan, I owned one they they broke their backs to fix problems and make me happy, they also have a very good resale.
Stay away from aluminum,,aluminum eventually starts to crack from stress, aptiong deck a must.
