OP, I won't bore you with my story in this thread; it's noted elsewhere on the forum. I just finished my first week in truck driving school. Wow! (I have another thread that was intended to be humorous and mentions a few of the questions I've heard in school this week. Others have chimed in with their own recollections as well.) If you have a brain, can pass a drug test, know how to get out of bed and be somewhere on time, and have any sense of personal responsibility and accountability, then you're already well ahead of most.

    Good luck! Enjoy the ride.

I wasn't aware that 3 year olds could read. Is it me? Am I missing something again?

Farmboy, you were 1 week out of truck driving school when you made this post, yet felt qualified to say "you're already well ahead of most?" I find that a bit disturbing. You got that information where, exactly? In here? Or in that vast well of experience you gained in that first 7 days?

@Starboyjim , Thanks for asking. I apologize for disturbing you as that wasn't my intent. If your question is asked in a good spirited manner, then I hope you will receive my response in the same manner. First, for clarification, I am not one week out of school, but rather one week into school, so worse yet I suppose.

My comment has nothing to do with driving a truck, but rather with just being a responsible human being. By my comments scattered throughout various threads and posts, I hope one will be able to see that I don't claim to know much about driving a big rig or being a trucker. I came here initially to learn and remain here for the same reason. However, I do have some experience with life and have been able to accomplish a few things by developing a teachable spirit, a good work ethic, and having a decent sense of personal responsibility.

My observations are based on the bravado and attitude I see on display and the comments and questions I hear. I have no doubt that some of the folks will be able to drive a big rig with skill and precision--many of them with more skill than I may ever have. However, I also have no doubt that many of them--"most" if we use 51% or greater as the benchmark--will have a difficult time being responsible, planning their day, and otherwise being motivated to do what is necessary to be successful--in this or any other industry. My opinions are just that, opinions. They are based on quite a few years of dealing with people in various contexts and from various perspectives. Having said all of that, we all mature at a different pace. I imagine that twenty years ago I may have appeared questionable to some who would have observed my attitude, etc. Anyone who is coachable and willing to persist through adversity can grow, learn and become successful. I am still learning every day, and I hope to continue the maturation and learning process as long as I'm blessed to be alive.

I hope this helps you understand what I meant in the previous comments. If not, I apologize again for disturbing you.

I took what he said to mean if you are smart and responsible, you are well ahead of most people who want to become truckers (as evidenced by his fellow CDL school students).

    Lonesome and farmboy73 Thank this.

Yeah a lot of men and women changing careers in later life and its all good. If you want to do Schneider tanker you have to be in great shape if you fail any of the physical test your out dry van however for any of the company it is easier Warning with Roehl you have to sign a contract agreement with them and are on the hook for $3,130.00 and has to be paid back regardless if you stay with them or not this is the only company that I know that does this but anyways good luck

Attitude is very important, though. I, for one, truly love my job. Even on difficult days it doesn't feel like work. I never dread going to work, or stare at the clock waiting for quitting time like I used to at every other job I had prior to trucking. Granted, I haven't had to sleep in a truck for a decade. Don't get me wrong, OTR was kinda rough for me which is why I got out of that as quickly as I could. It steadily got better for me as more opportunities became available with experience.

thanks guys, been off on a roadtrip for a bit. went to FL for Christmas with my dad. great ride back going through the snow storm. LOL

    thanks Sharps for the encouragement.

BTW Schneider does have co paid training now and than. I have an invite from them currently.

Funny how much better of a co Wolding is now days than they were 30 years ago. LOL than again, I think they were all the same back than.

Starboy -- yeah, not sure if 3 year olds can do better than recognize colors but it was what he asked for. I am regularly told to write things so a 3rd grader can comprehend them. LOL

Farmboy -- I know what you mean. than again those things apply everywhere as well. we had an intern come to work with us. his first question (I kid you not) "where are the nap pods"

apparently someone told him all office jobs have nap pods for when they get stressed. Good kid, but yeah he never heard the end of that one.

Farmboy, you had a nice classy reply, not so sure I would've been so forgiving. WHY do some of you guys insist on being a dick? I see this sometimes @Chinatown when all he tries to do is help. This forum is for everybody who needs help, some of you guys act like you were born with a CDL and never needed help or messed up. For God's sake, don't click if you don't like what's being said.
