Ticket in another state long ago, will it affect me obtaining a CDL?

Let me tell you a story and you can make your own decision.

I grew up in PA. When I was 16 in 1977, I let a friend drive my car with me and two others in it. We passed a state trooper doing 80. My so called friend whips over on the shoulder while the state trooper is doing a Uturn about a half mile down the road.

My so called friend plea's with me to switch drivers because he doesn't have a license. He swears he'll pay the ticket. So young and dumb I do and knock off the rear view mirror in the process. The cop gives me a 10 over speeding ticket. I give it to my friend. Later in the month I asked if he paid it and he said yes.

Well life goes on and I moved to SC, FL and TN and transfer my license no problem over the next 10 years. Then I went to truck driving school in 1995 and get my permit. Everything went fine until I went down to pick up my CDL. They said my license was suspended in FL. WHAT?? I contact FL and they said my license was suspended because my license was suspended in SC. WHAT? I contact SC and they said my license was suspended because my license was suspended in PA. I couldn't believe all what was going on.

Finally I contacted PA and it turns out that guy never paid that ticket 18 years ago.
So I had to pay the fine and a reinstatement fee and get a letter of clearance in PA and each of the following states one by one. It was a nightmare, but I cleared it up.

So if I was you, I would clear everything behind you no matter how long it has been. It will haunt you when they run that extensive background check in the database.
You'll just have to pay the fine and maybe a reinstatement fee. That info is in the computer. It just hasn't been reported to your state. But when you get that CDL, they will do a 50 state check.

If I ever see that guy again....

Wow, that is grimy right there! I don't know if I'd trust someone with that, I'm not sure I'd even have been so nice in the first place to switch spots.

I'm still a little nervous about it, really think going for my CDL is the best thing I could do right now, and I've been weighting my options for some time, this isn't a rash decision or anything on my part. It would be a major letdown should this end up being a problem, and being such a serious violation that it was, I'd be afraid of being thrown in the slammer. I guess they'll find out when they do the 50 state check and I'll go from there.

If you could just remember what county it was.

If they have a warrent for you, it may not show at DMV......

Hmmm, I don't remember what county, I suppose I could call all the counties along 81... might have been somewhere near Roanoke but It's all a blur to me along with a lot of memories from those days

Try to take care of it...

If you report it to any company you apply to, and they refuse you. That's it. they refused you.

If you lie that you have no tickets and they find out, then you have made an almost ten year old problem into a current one.

But if they ask, "do you have any tickets in the last 5 years?" Hold your head up and say no.
