If you lease a truck can you take out the plastic cabinets and replace them with ones you build yourself? I designed and installed custom cabinet systems in both my uncles trucks last year and they turned out very nice. I love the look and feel of wood.

I guess I'm a bit different than most because I DON'T want a Peterbilt or a Kenworth to drive. I've driven both, and although the Pete and KW are better insulated than the Freightliner...they just don't fit me.
The company I drive for now has Petes and Columbia Freightliners. I drove a Pete for 1 day and got switched to a Freightliner. These are daycabs and as such have limited space.
BUT.......It's called leg room.
As a tall guy, where I can put my legs is important.
The Freightliner wins this arguement...hands down.
Then you can talk about fuel economy. Our Freightliners with the Mercedes-Benz engines get about 1 mpg better than the Petes with the Cat engines.
There are a couple of more things as well. The Petes are heavier than the Freightliners...but run faster (1-2 mph faster) The Freightliners pull better and are lighter by about 1000 pounds. The more you can pull in the business I'm in now means more money. -
Im only 5'6" so leg room isnt an issue for me. My issue is everything feels so cheap in a freightliner. And like you said the insulation leaves much to be desired. The first thing I didnt like about the columbias and centuries is how it feels when Im driving. Everything feels like mashed potatoes in a freightliner. But give me a coronado and i'll shut up. I would really like to get a KW T660. Even a low milage KW T600 would suit me fine. Another thing I dont like is the large ####pits unless its a Volvo. But Im young and picky I guess. When it really comes down to it, I'll take what I can get.
-
On the picky thing.
I wish they still made FLDs...I sure put a LOT of miles on those trucks, the newer Freightliners leave a lot to be desired.
The new dash and switches just aren't to my taste. I wish they'd go back to the old style.
I know I'll catch some fallout from this...but remember that it's just a truck. To me this translates to just that...a vehicle to drive to earn a living in relative comfort. Sure, Petes and KWs look better, but looks don't necessarily pay better. -
I'd be happy if freightliner could build a truck with a decent cup holder, and that means one that doesn't dig directly into my knee cap

Well i talked to my prime recruiter today and all were waiting on is a reference to verify my time off after I got out of the service and the safety department's okay. Then I'll be starting in Jan hopefully. I gotta do 40k miles with a trainer before I become a 1st seat driver, but I dont mind since I wanna learn as much about running my own truck that I can. I just dont think Im gonna put up with a lousy dirty sloppy disgusting trainer this time around.
