Finally.....sitting still for a little while. Kinda dropped out of site for a few days... Had one of our animals get a real bad infection and our daughter calls cryin' wondering what to do....says he can't get up....swelled up around his front leg....real hot all over.....So, Mama and me go into Get Home in a hurry mode....Only problem is....We're in CA! Our FM is off to PA to train the new dispatchers that came over when we bought TRL...so, we have to deal with the "B" team....I gotta say....I think I have the best FM at Prime! He works with me and tries his best to get me the best loads....and we work well together. Some of these other(YOUNGER) clowns they have in there.....well, lets just say I feel sorry for the folks that have to deal with them every day. Anyway, we ended up taking 2 days to load out of CA...."B" team FM sends me a load that has 2 P/U's.... not a problem....load goes right by the house....plenty of time to get things taken care of..... This load is a former TRL customer..... so FM knows nothing about shippers.... Shipper 1....strawberries from Oxnard, CA.....1st come 1st serve..... I get my dispatch at 1400 cst.... only 98 miles dh....(Acceptable)....have to be there by 1700 Local.....so, this gives us 5 hours to get there.....from Ontario, CA to Oxnard, CA....we get there with 30 min to spare.....
"There are 44 trucks in front of you señor".....I call the now "C" team......I won't repeat what I said.....but, I think the guy was cryin' when I got finished. Well....nothing else in the area....so, we wait....and wait....and wait.....(Just like everyone else at this shipper)....got out at 1200 cst...THE NEXT DAY.....by this time I had talked to "B" team guy.....and made him cry too.....
Next stop....down close to Mexico.....Brawley, CA... Get there at around 1730 local....in the door by 2100.....Loaded (1st time) by 2330....
not too bad.. Pull up...close doors....lock and seal trailer....back back down in the hole...go get my paperwork.....
One of the 24 skids that the loader had loaded was the wrong skid....and it's not one of the last....Finally get out of there about 0030 local on Wed morning....Load was originally supposed to be in Philly by Thurs 0700.....NOT! Got it re-scheduled for Friday at 1500.
In the mean time....had daughter call the vet....he said this doesn't look good.....but, bring him in....if nothing else....I'll put him down...no charge. Next day, daughter calls cryin'....she's at the vet...he's not telling her anything she wants to hear....I talk to him....he says there's a slight chance he can hit him with some EXTRA heavy duty antibiotics...it's the only thing he can think of....and knowing his history....he might actually make it.....go ahead I say....
By the time we get home....he's up....eatin'....walking good.....still some swelling....but TONS better! Went the southern route.....60 more miles....cheaper fuel.....0 bad weather!!!
Then...we get empty in Philly.....deadhead 27 miles.....then back to CA...this time....Newark, CA....great freight area.....came across the top and only missed our appt time by 30 min.....and that's going through all that crap in Northern OH...IN....IL.....IA(ICE!).....NE....WY(Wind & Snow).....and to top it off......had to chain up over Donner....only 2 sets tho....so it wasn't too bad...but....40 miles worth!! YeHaaa!! Almost 6000 miles....whew.
Passin Thru.....The fact that we have a choice of how we want to do this is what makes this such a great country....you think I'm crazy....I'm happy....makin' money.....and got Mama right by my side.
IF...and that's a BIG if....the motor goes out....it'll be warrantied.....the truck will be sold back to Freightliner LONG before the 600k warranty goes out. They will take it away from me around 460K....so, I'm not really worried about that. If anything else that costs large money breaks.....it's covered too!!
Come on over....they'll put you in a new truck with that big warranty....it'll even have new tires on it...and you won't have to worry about a trailer... they supply that...and don't charge you anything....unless you tear something(tires) up through negligence.
If you and your trainer get along....you can stay with him all the way through....I do know that some of the trainers only take CDL students because they don't wanna have to ride behind someone else... But, most will take you all the way if you want.
Company drivers do not pay for reefer fuel.....Lease Operators DO!
I'll try to read back through and catch up on some more of the questions. But, I gotta get back in there....and get my trailer....and get headed back east(Southeast).
Oh...and you guys have a good week....and let me know if I can help once you get here!
Time for Prime.....

Hey S&L, glad to hear you both are doing well. And also glad that 'Rover' is doing fine too.
Good to hear that despite the weather, you guys are still moving well. Can't wait to hear from you guys again! -
Glad to hear you pup is ok. Thanks for the response about the refer fuel. I have another question on the subject, if you drop a trailer with a full tank of fuel you bought and pick one up thats empty, are you out for a second tank of refer fuel? Seems that could get expensive as people probibally leave them low on fuel to save some money.
oh, and , nets or doors. Thanks -
I have been reading the adventures of Steve & Lo for a little while, and find them to be great and promising. I am leaving a management job Jan 2, 2008 that I have been with 15.5 years due to company downsizing.
I have my Class A CDL from previous driving experience from 1992, but need to take a refresher course (160 hrs), or sign on with someone like Prime to go through their training program. Tentatively, I have agreed to go to Prime Jan 9, 2008, but also bouncing the idea of going through Roadmaster's school for their 3-week 160hr course, as I also have a pre-hire approval with US Xpress and trying to get a few more to have options.
Any thoughts out there. Have been reading some good things on Prime's training in the earlier posts. Will look forward to anyone's and everyone's insight.
Thanks and Merry Christmas to All!!!!! -
Prime does have a good training program, but leasing a truck with Prime is a business, not just driving a truck. If you go with Prime, be a company driver first, then if so inclined, take the next step.

Slick50,
I agree that I will remain a company driver for quite awhile...I have no plans on leasing a truck in my first year or so. Eventually, I will give the matter some serious consideration since I have a management degree and have successfully manage a business over 10-years profitably.
Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!!!! -
well where the heck did they runn off to. slips in then slips right back out under the radar.. hey steve and lo i will be in your neck of the woods in a few hours (Tenn), wondering where the hell you guys are at..
take care be safe jugg -
I just wanted to take a minute tell all of you thank you. The information that each and everyone of you have provided has been invaluable to me. I am an unemployed Corporate Director of Engineering who was laid off (2nd time in 3years) in late September. I have always contemplated driving for a career. I can remember even as a kid of dreaming of being behind the wheel of a truck. Fed up with all of the corporate bull I have decided to take the plunge. I will be attending the Prime training school in January. I am excited at the prospect of becoming a driver for Prime. In reading all of your comments I feel that I have made the right choice (Prime). My only regret is not making a decision sooner but it is hard to get me out of the tree stand October through December.

CountryCharm.....sorry to hear about your luck...or lack of it. But, let's take a look at what you said.....You took off for an extended period for personal reasons.....Now...If you had a business that had a building leased....complete with stock and utilities....and closed that business for an extended time....do you think that you wouldn't be behind after returning? You would still owe for your lease....and your stock....and your utilities.....
Any time you are in business for yourself....you take time off....you lose money. Whether you lease or buy whatever you use in your business. Now...lets say you had bought a truck....and leased on to another company.....you take the same time off.....this time you lose your truck and ruin your credit.....
To go into this kind of business.....and it is a business....you have to be ready/able to make sacrifices at home. You obviously were not ready to make this kind of commitment.....and I don't fault you for that. I too made the decision 13 years ago to put this business on hold until my children were grown. They are....and my wife and I made the move. It has not been the most well received decision my wife has made. Our daughters have always had unrestricted access to their mom....now, more times than not...she's unavailable.
No one has said that the money falls in your lap here.....you have to work for it....and if you aren't able or willing to do the work..you won't make it. I feel bad that you had to go through so much to figure out that you didn't want to do this. But, don't blame Prime. You and your husband were both adults making your own decisions. Prime is in the business to make money....and they tell you that up front....they also tell you that if you want to make money it's up to you how much you make....just like the guy that owns the little grocery store down the road....he has to make personal sacrifices to make it in the business world. You just hope those personal sacrifices are worth it in the long run.
Just remember....bad business decisions will kill you no matter what business you are in. I hope things go better for you and your family in the future. But, the way I feel....if you have your family....everything else will work out. And, it sounds like you put your family first. Have a Merry Christmas.
