Hey guys, I just finished my 2 week dedicated FedEx run over the mountains of Co. Phew! Sucked to chain up every day but the $$$ was outstanding.
Cant say how much because of the jealous old timers and the ones who dont run a business properly so the go bankrupt.
Anyways there was an avalanche today on my route over the Veil pass so Im glad I was done. Headed to Penn. now and up to Maine for Christmas that I did not have yet. Happy new year guys and girls. Be safe and live long and prosper. -
The guy that was running it that you took over for is a buddy of mine....The money is good....but I wouldn't run it! I hate that road when the weather is good....much less this time of year....whoever has it for the next 2-3 rounds will earn their money.....if they're lucky!

I did forget to mention something that I feel is going to be important to any of you new guys regardless of the company you work for.
It was said that you have to be a brown noser in order to make it as a lease operator or even an o/o. When it was said, I believe they were referring to me and the $$$ that I make here at prime. I do not have to brown nose and never will have to. It is true that I do become the friend of the people that I work for because that is who I am. When I work for any company, that company is now my company and I do what I have to, to make sure that I do all I can to make that company a profit. I owned my own company for 20 years and gave it to my son for his birthday when I became "Semi-Retired". Unfortunately I will probably end up with my own fleet in the next 4 years but I cant seem to slow down for some reason.
Bottom line is that you do not have to brown nose if you do the following:
1. Be so proud of where you work that it becomes part of you and you defend it if you have to. If you cant feel like that then you are at the wrong company.
2. Demand 20% more of yourself than the company demands of you. Never be late on a load unless an act of God causes it. This is not brown nosing, it is pride in your job. If anyone tells you different then they are the ones who are going to go bankrupt and not you. They are the ones who feel that the company owes them a meal and that they have a CDL so they are the boss of the world!!
3. Christmas bonuses for your DM if you feel that he deserves it. If he does not then it is just brown nosing. You do not have to keep your DM if there is a conflict of interest. I personally interviewed my DM and let him know that there are no hard feelings if he is not compatible to me but if we can not see eye to eye then I was going to go to the next guy. I laid out my plan to him and what I was going to do to achieve it and he said if I did what I said then I would take home $1350 to $2000 every week and I have.
3. Remember that leasing is not for everyone. If you do not have goals in life and do not have the ability to make a business plan, then be a company driver until you do. Make sure that you explain your plan to your DM and then ask what you have to do to achieve that goal. But without a goal you have no business trying to run a business.
4. Expect to have problems and issues in any business and prepare for them in advance. Having extra $$$ does not mean that you have to spend every dime of it and not put any away, If you do then you disregarded #3. 23% of what you think is your $$$ is Uncle Sam's. 15% more goes to a maintenance account until you have built about $12,000 then when you need to use any of it, you consider it a loan to yourself and you pay it back to yourself until you reach $12,000 again or more if you can.
I got a little off track there but bottom line is that you do not have to be a brown noser if you have earned enough respect that all rewards come to you naturally by following these guild lines and maybe a few that I forgot to add. Don't hesitate to ask us here on this site as well. Most anyone that works with prime are happy to help you with your questions. Ive been teaching people for years. Some will learn and some will be left behind... -
Yea, Terry is cool. I never had to chain before and he took the time to show me how to properly do so. I would have done it all winter if it were available but it is for teams and I am solo so it was good $$$ for me but was tight to run it and log it at the same time...lol...

The lady that made that post isn't affiliated with the company any more....she and her husband tried.....but didn't have the business sense to make it. It seems they jumped in over their heads....didn't realize that their priorities were at home instead of the job....which I can't fault them for....been there...done that(the priorities part)....I'm just glad I figured it out before I dug myself in a hole. Luckily, my family was understanding and helped me finish up my lease before I came home to take care of them.
That's why I tell everybody I talk to....before getting started in this part of trucking(OTR)....I always think a man(or woman) should think hard before leaving home for weeks at a time and leaving their kids at home for their spouse to take care of all alone. I suggest anyone with children work locally until the kids are AT LEAST in high school. I drove locally for 13 years while my kids were at home......but, they're gone now....and it's time for my wife and I to get out and go!! -
I agree with you my friend. I would not be doing this unless my kids were grown and married. I was a contractor for 20 years and that was bad enough. Anyone that has kids at home would not be able to do this with good conscience unless they were bothered by having a wife and kids or felt that desperate times required desperate measures and the cared so much about them that they felt it was a choice they had to make and a sacrifice as well. They were right to keep their priorities at home but they were not right to bash Prime and criticize me for a mistake that they clearly made themselves. We all make mistakes all of the time but I take responsibility for mine, learn from them and move on. Not cast the blame on the person that had no control over it all.
