Thank you Steve and Lo, and Semi Retired for your posts. Your posts have been very helpful in my decision to come to Primes orientation Jan 7th. Semi Retired your last post was right on the money. I believe I have the right frame of mind and work ethic to succeed, since Ive been off the road for 12 yrs I have to start out as a C seat driver and am sure I will get my road legs back quickly, all the while thinking of what and how to become successful as a Prime lease operator. Steve and Lo you have talked about being more than just a company driver, so I would like to ask you what it is you think needs to be done differently or exactly what you need to do to be a successful Prime operator and what circumstances makes a good load or a bad load, I know there are many variables but your knowledge is greatly appreciated. Semi Retired you posted you should do 20 % more than whats required, and I would like to know what you do extra or the things you would do different than what a company driver does that makes you successful. Any and all suggestions would be helpful.
Scurvydog got your PM, I will be attending orientation at Primes new terminal in Pittston PA. Im guessing your going to Springfield I dont have enough posts to PM you back so if you get this message I would like to get in touch with you, Ill pm you when I can and give you my cell #, hope things go well for you.
Happy New Year everyone
Hope you have a safe and blessed trip

Well Black Bart....welcome aboard! I know you'll enjoy it here....There are a lot of good people here and you will make some very good friends. I know we have met more friendly people here than at any other place I've ever worked. And my wife really likes it here....And she isn't really known for getting out there and meeting people.....but, she has really enjoyed going to "The Palace"....and meeting people and making new friends!

Well....SWMBO finally made me get my big butt back in the truck today....so, we're back at work.....if you could call it that....this is more like a vacation than the time at home....too many chores to do there.... Diggin' up trees....re-planting same trees.....pullin' up shrubs.....(those got burned!!).....Burning brush(well....that's not exactly a chore for a pyro!!)... Hangin' Flat Screens.....etc. etc.
But, we are finally back on the road.... Had to deadhead about 175 miles to pick up our first load of the year...CHICKEN....yuk....
Dispatched total miles....864.....Revenue....$1098.54...just over $1.27....not the best....but we will probably be preplanned on a FedEx load that will more than make up for it.....
Gonna empty out within sight of Cowboy stadium......Friday morning. Gonna load in a couple of hours. Gonna go chase Mama around the sleeper.....He He He.....
I know this year is gonna be better than last...I won't have to wait til September to get Mama in the truck! Not to mention the Grand Baby on the way.....God truly has blessed me! Thank you Lord! -
Is that to the truck, or is that before primes cut. If its gross, that's only .94 to the truck.

I believe that expecting 20% more out of yourself than other expect out of you is simply a state of mind to get yourself into. It is both physical and mental in nature. It is the ability to go above and beyond without being remorseful about it or expecting a reward per say. The rewards will automatically come because when the ones who matter thinks of a person that they can trust, it will be your name that comes to mind. I have trained myself to never ever sit at the bottom of a ladder when I do not have any fear about climbing right up it. In the case of driving a rig, I did not want to really climb the ladder but it is built into my character now so it comes naturally. If it does not feel like work then I will do it but when it starts to feel like work then I'll try to hold back. The purpose of me driving was so that I would never have to work again and so far I have not..lol...That is the mental and a bit of the physical.
I can tell you what makes me nominated every other month for employee of the month after only being here for 6 months with prime.
1. I never ever refuse a load because I trust that my DM knows what he is doing and so long as he keeps to his word about my income then I do not give him a problem.
2. I am never ever ever late for a pickup or delivery no matter what it takes to get it done. That is a big part of the 20%!!!
3. I run as hard as my truck will go and make sure that i am preloaded before I get unloaded so that I do not have down time. That is easy to do when you have a drop and hook.
This is a small business and you have to run it. Do not depend on others to look after your check! You need to advertise yourself, promote yourself, and sell your product which is yourself. If you have a supply (your driving abilities) that are in demand then it will sell itself so long as it is not damaged goods.
And it does not hurt to advertise. Such as remind others that you have no service failures as long as other things that may be on our side. If you have earned respect that you deserve then you must demand it! But do not make demands before you have built up your credits to do so.
Im here for you if you need me and will help in any way that I can. I believe that knowledge is power and decisions should be made on an educated though and not a simple whim.
Be good and be safe
