I've been reading the prime boards, but I'm running out of time (the recruiter was supposed to call me today). My hubby and I filled out apps in June, and were accepted. then I saw a prime settlement statement, and went "NO WAY". But things are not working out the way we'd like them to at the big blue C. The people here are great, love the big volvo, adore the $1000 vacation every 3 to 3 1/2 months, miles used to suck only for solos, but now suck for teams too. My grandkids expect to be spoiled, and I can't do it on 5000 or less miles per week. But I still have questions. I'm sure they've probably been answered somewhere on one of these boards, but I'm running out of time trying to find them.
Ok, I know the trucks are under serious warrantees. But what about the shop down time? Is there any pay for sitting in a shop waiting for repairs?
Steve and Lo mentioned deer hunting costing them $500+ (you should ALWAYS get OUT of your truck before deer hunting), was it not covered by the truck insurance? Or was it due to a deductible? If so, how much is the deductibles?
Does prime have any dedicated runs? or regionals (besides the NE)? I live in Oklahoma.
Did I read somewhere that you do not have to use primes truck insurance? If so, can ya'll recommend any others (I'd like to check them before getting there)
Now about switching FM's. I've heard you can, and I've read you can't. Should I get the recruiter to put it in writing for me? Please don't lecture me about getting along with my fm, i've read a few of them, and agree for the most part. I also know that as a driver (never leased or owned before), it's a 50/50 thing. I can only run the loads that he/she gives me. I think this is what is scaring me most about prime. we are easy to get along with, never turn down loads, I consider us always on time. I can look at a load and tell them, "we will do our best, might not make it" "no problem at all" or "you need to reschedule" then it's up to the fm. We are always there before the time I tell them we'll be there. But ALL companies have a bad fm or two (and a bad driver or two), what if I get one? I need one to keep us moving, sitting is nice once in awhile, but when we leave home on Tuesday, and both take 34 hour restarts by Friday (happened two weeks ago)it's time to say "goodbye".
anyway, thanks for any help. -

Well....we had one load that went from Ontario, CA to Denver....44K+ and got 6.3mpgs....which I thought, all things considered was pretty good. We don't run fast.....usually 60-62mph.....and loads have been running in the mid 30K range....mostly back and forth across I-40.....and you know as well as I do that sometimes you can be on flat ground and go backwards as far as fuel mileage goes. My wife is getting a lot better at her shifting and the way she accelerates(easy is good)....I think all the whining that I've done about the hard shifts and mashing the gas to get going is starting to pay off! I think the combination of the gentler driving style and slowing down have definitely paid off. And with our FSC being paid based on 6mpgs.......$$$$ It's like getting a raise on every load. Between the discounts(As much as $.57 cents per gallon off the pump price in some spots).....and the good FSC it definitely drives our fuel costs right down to the bottom! Definitely makes it easier to make a living!! Oh....by the way....O/O's that pull for Prime get the same FSC and Fuel Discounts as we do......$$$$$$

How much I've driven has nothing to do with anything. I don't make any claims. I ask questions and convey what others have said, and I say that "others" have said, this or that.
What the heck does being an O/O or company driver have to do with asking questions about fuel mileage or any truck questions for that matter.
You have said in posts that a person needs to becareful when listing to other drivers. This is your chance to ask a guy about his truck and how he's getting 7 mpg. (I guess know one has to ask know, he's said it in his post).Last edited: Aug 23, 2008

Thanks for answering so quickly. I have been reading at the prime forum too, registered yesterday, still waiting....
solo drivers do well at prime too, right? I'm asking because I don't want to run full time anymore. We want to run hard for about 3 months or so, build up the savings. Then we want to team 3 weeks on 3 weeks off. How do you honestly think that would work?
Also, what software do you use, or recommend?
the more I know before I reach the "palace" the better off we'll be.
thanks again.
